Advice? If I disconnect my PC from the internet, can I create a very basic virtual PC machine that resides on my PC and use that to connect to the internet? Does my internet adaptor have to be enabled on the host PC?
You can install a virtual Linux system within Windows, and go online with that. It's free. And it would be Sandboxed, so that Windows will stay offline and untouched. You can still go online with Windows if need be for short periods of time, to authorize for example. You might also have to download with Windows, since Linux downloads files as "tarballs," which won't open in Windows. But, you can be religious about your downloads, and not install them until you have scanned them, with Malwarebytes for example. Or even MSE. Or doenload on another Windows computer, scan for malware, then save to an external drive and install from there.

There's a lot of panic and fear running wild here since Gibson dropped the bomb which is normal. I personally have been with Cakewalk for 18 years and have grown with the various upgrades and platforms and I am not planning to change anything at this point. I have been using SPLAT for years and it enables me to produce great results. I know the DAW well and the workflow for me is fast and smooth. Learning a new program is something I'm not really looking forward too. I will stick with it until the Apocalypses of Cakewalk occurs. In other words when the day comes and I open up the program and it is lifeless and it's cold carcass refuses to respond then and only then will I wear black and start the mourning process. I know several people that are still using X2 and X3 and it works for them. I think it won't come to a sudden death and if I never got another update so be it I can still make great recordings with what I have.
I think a group of forward thinking investors will see the importance of Sonar and take it over and from that Sonar will become the premier DAW and second to none. Just wait it out and let this take it's course. Gibson and it's over priced guitars will die well before Sonar. I plan on upgrading my studio in the spring and will purchase a new computer and perhaps a new DAW as an alternative should the Apocalypses of Sonar become a reality however I will retain my current computer and current version of Sonar Platinum and use it as my main DAW. Sonar will rise again and from this and a mightier version will emerge

If want to have virtual guest machine with access to internet you must have enabled your network interface on host machine. Software layer must use hardware and as far as I know none of implementation of virtual environment running on windows is able to create direct layer to network not affected by state of network adapter on host machine.

Please please please someone buy Cakewalk Sonar. I'm a subscription user and had actually tried so many other DAW's and none of them are anything like Sonar. I actually hate the other ones to be honest. I'm going to continue using Sonar as long as possible. Just the fact that no other DAW even has UWP to allow me to use a midi guitar controller with a bluetooth connection like a Jamstik+ with windows 10. Someone has to be able to know something. If everything is going to end, tell me this...why not just allow us users to download all the products for everything for free!
