Don't Run Me Off
MOP is colored this I know. I'm just wondering if it's MOP or a truth. I don't want to start a war. I can't help my observations. I have listened to a lot of music on several different music sites and looked at listen counts. According to my colored views if the artist happens to be female the track gets more plays than if it's a male artist. I think I have pretty good judgement and listening skills but I could be wrong. It even seem like sometimes there are more plays even if the track sounds worse. If there is a nice looking female on the cover...scratch that..even a half decent looking female the track gets a higher count. Am I wrong...don't run me off. I have also noticed that any kind of dance or techno music gets high listens. I mean like 5000-10,000 listens. Are there really that many people who love to hear synthesizers burp under midi control and pond out simple beats to the masses? What am I missing here? Everything? Maybe just a little?

Makes me wonder who's actually listening to that genre? Surely not just young males. Any idea what the demographic looks like? Having a female up front is certainly nothing new. Back in the early 70's when I first came to Seattle, I was told that having a girl singer would guarantee steady work. They were right. We had not one, but two girls up front, with coordinated outfits and dance steps. It really did open doors for us - for a few months, anyway. Then one singers' boyfriend started fooling around with the other singer and they stopped talking to one another. Yes, he was a drummer.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

Two words that the advertising business really understands and uses all the time. Sex sells. Men natually gravite to beautiful women. So of course those songs get more hits. Susan Boyle (Spelling??) shocked people with her beautifil voice because everything else about her appearence didnt look as beautiful as her voice. We're natuaral shallow like that. We always have been since .....FOREVER! Anyway... Carry on.

I guess I'm becoming a dinosaur Bit. Loosing touch I guess. I haven't done any detailed kind of a demographic, just my observations and data collecting on my own. As an example one artist I listened to and who has nice tracks. She has a nice voice and the recordings are well done. She is a nice looking girl but not model material . I have heard similar or better tracks than hers by male artists and they get nowhere near the plays. Could be other unknown factors involved and I used the starise rating system which may be flawed. Just a few days in she had over 600 plays on one of her tracks. 600 plays is still small compared to many others but I think I see a definite difference. I think age group is another big factor. One of the larger upload sites seem to cater heavily toward DJ/Techno/ and EDM. The Deadmau stuff. Those songs have thousands and thousands of plays. Lots of DJs actually go many of these sites to rip material to use in their shows. Like everything else I think that big corporate money has made it's way into some of this. How else could a track that certainly seems like something that can be made by the average engineer in a few hours get 10,000 plays? I knew awhile back that dance music was pretty big in Europe. It must be bigger now than ever. I don't notice that same trend here in the states to that extent. Maybe the clubs in NY and several other large cities are going big with EDM music but I certainly don't see that happening around where I live.

Mooch I agree sex sells. But I think it also seems to be a "sex Lite" thing sometimes. Maybe more like femininity sells. I have been around enough to know that when a woman shows up she gets a lot of attention when there are more men than women. Same goes for a woman entering a physical room. I think it's almost an instinctual thing for men to cater to the opposite sex. Heck I'll be the first to admit that I like women too. They are sure a lot more interesting to look at than men are. They add a lot to life.Life wouldn't be nearly as fun or interesting without them around...I think that this sometimes translates well into marketing if men are buying the product.

I find most of today's modern music is more performance art than anything else. I just don't see myself having a listening session with most of it. What would I say? That turntable solo was sublime? You really used those ripped off tracks to great advantage!

If I had my media player completely filled, I could tell you how many hours weeks of trance I had. Maybe that would be a better indicator? I used to be able to get board recordings (made by the DJ straight from his mixing board - best quality you can get). I've got some live mixes that are up to five hours long... Of course, I haven't had much time to listen to trance lately because I've been on a bit of a Prog trip lately. So much good music, so little time to listen to it all!

Star FWIW here's how I see it... In 1950 the music scene completely changed and it exploded. With the electric guitar folk and big band was replaced with electric guitar bands. Rock and Roll hit the music scene and created a market that was a monster on the loose. "Guitar Gods" were created and everybody and their dog wanted to learn how to play and be in a band. The public ate it up. By 1980 the era of guitar gods was coming to an end. With Satriani, Vai and the likes guitar playing had evolved from basic skills to incredible "gymnastic" precision. Guitarist became a dime a dozen and the wow factor became oh um. The computer age coming in when it did was perfect timing. It gave ability to everyone to "make music"... and now...it is what it is, whatever it is...it's not the same as it was during that era and it never will be again. There are many things very heavy "things" that we have experienced, like the space race, muscle care era, etc. that will never happen again...but many of us can say we were alive and lived the years when the electic guitar was born and musicians created Rock and Roll and took music to heights that it will never reach again. Well that's how I see it.

Bit- LOL Spacey- I agree. Who would have thought that someone could "make music" with nothing but a computer? Things have indeed changed. A heads up on the whole Soundcloud thing. Did you know that you can buy a Bot that will like others posts and even make comments in your absence??? Maybe this is why I got a like from a girl in a bikini with an XXX suffix in her name. ...so maybe this is at least some of the problem. The bot recognizes a new song post and immediately gives it a like.It will automatically post your track to groups lists etc. The theory being that if you listen and comment you will get listens....kind of a shallow concept don't ya think? I looked over my trends and discovered one listener who liked one of my tracks and she didn't even listen to the track. Just so you know..I will never resort to a bot for plays on my tracks...never. If you don't have any qualms then go for it. If I say I like one of your tracks I was really there and I really liked the track. I don't like tracks because you like my tracks and I try to give honest comments on the tracks I listen to. I have no doubt that millions will use a bot and probably ruin Soundcloud for the intention it was made for.
