Don't Stop Believin

Here's one of my favorites from Journey.  I used Izotope's vinyl at the beginning.  I tried to make the first part sound like an "old" recording (mono, low fi, phase shifter), and then morph into a modern sound when the full band kicks in.

Please critique.  Thank you!

This is great! My brothers always ragged on me for liking Journey and all I could say is “you don’t get it – it’s good, solid rock and roll”. This is a terrific cover – it comes on a bit strong but the playing is wonderful – they (Journey) should sound this good. Vocal is great and the playing is superb. You totally nailed the guitar, really very cool.  Abrupt ending for sure. Beautiful job.

Pretty cool. Nice guitar work. The only criticism I have is that guitar doesn't really fit in with everything else. It just seems more "in your face" than the rest of the track... maybe too dry? EQ'd differently?

Manny - thanks for the feedback - I'm glad you liked it.  Yeah, the ending - I shortened up the number of chorus's at the end, and maybe that's not such a good idea.

Chappel - Thanks for the feedback.  I was going for a modern guitar sound to contrast with the 1st part which was lo fi.  Schons guitar was chorused, one track, and buried in the mix.  That was standard in the 80's.  I doulbled up - two mono tracks hard left and right.  And I eq'd it like a modern in your face sound - and much louder in the mix.  But there is something I don't like about the EQ on the guitar - kind of a nasaly tone.  I tried to notch it out, but I'm thinking it maybe it's my guitar / amp combination.  Also, maybe I'll try backing the guitars down slightly and bring up the synth.

:-) I didn't think you could sing this high? But I didn't think anyone could sing this high...

It seemed to get "too much louder" when everything kicked in?

Maybe should have been louder before then a little?

Really good performances and technique on a classic "and virtually impossible to duplicate?" song? That you did an incredible cover of, bravo...

    Thanks Mark.

Robby - Thanks.  I couldn't sing that high for most of my life.  I just learned how last year.   Thanks for the feedback on the loudness change.  I was intentionally trying to make an impact coming from the "lo fi" beginning and exploding into a modern rock format.  Maybe a bit too much volume contrast.

Update:  I re-mixed - guitars down 1.5db, Synths up 3db.  And I wetted down the guitars with a bit more room reverb and raised the low mids a little to warm it up.

Very well done ..... Enjoyed it. I love Neal Schon's work with Santana a lot. I never really was a big Journey fan, though!

One Reason - thanks a lot!

Tap - I loved Journey, and I always wanted to know where schon played on the santana albums.  It wasn't documented too well - do you know any particular solos that were Neal's?

    Tim - Thanks!

    Geno,

Nice job.   Tough to pull off as everyone knows the song so well and "The Voice"  (Steve Perry) is an outstanding singer.  I thought it was a good, modern rendition of the song.

    Geno,
Neal plays on the 3rd Santana Album. Just listen to the entire album and then you'll know why he turned down Clapton to play with Carlos....

Excellent playing, Geno. Is that snare from Superior? It really sounds great. I also loved all the triplets on the drum fills.

Not my sort of music, but great mix and master, the guitars are fine def that 80's sound.  Are you singing, it sounds like Brian May and some of the guitar sounds very Brian May.

    Good Job!!!

    Great song.

    Good cover.

The singing was my favorite (no sense it not sounding like SP if you're gonna do a cover of him).

I was not fond of the bass guitar choice.

    Drums are good.

    markno - Thanks.

Tap - I'm listening to some of the Santana 3 now.

    JamzOr, Benzofog - Thank you

James - Yeah the snare is the Rogers Wood from Superior Drummer 2.  I've got it eq'd with notches in a few spots where I didn't like the frequencies.  I was trying to make it sound like my old AD snare.  Lately I really am liking the nirZ snare with no EQ.

phil - Thanks.  The thing is you could sing up there if you wanted to - anyone can.

    Wookiee - thanks

Terry - I appreciate your comments!

Janet - thanks for your support.

Ben - Thank you.  Yes that's me singing.

bapu - thank you for your comments - any suggestions on the bass?

You really did a great job on this one Geno!  I didn't care for the Izotope Vinyl treatment at the beginning but that's just personal taste.  You really nailed the guitar tone on the solo and did a great job playing.  Great job on the vocals as well.

Hi Geno, that's some piece of work. Don't know the original, Journey aren't that well known in Holland, so I was hoping for more solo guitar but that's your fault, you play to good . Vocals are excellent.
