So if those that don't study history are doomed to repeat it, will JR do it again and again and again?

They used to teach history, but they didn't want to repeat it.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

I think that the problem isn't whether they're teaching it or not, it's that you can get the diploma w/o actually learning and understanding it.

Considering that many future teachers slip through the same cracks and got where they are because of those cracks, it's hard to be optimistic.

It's worse than that here - there are actually 2 year college courses for 16-18yr olds where the very lowest grade they can possibly attain is "pass" !

    No, sadly I'm not joking.

Re: Don't they teach history any more? 2013/06/21 17:12:11 (permalink)
You know, I had access to the same mediocre english lessons as the rest of my buddies (the lessons have to be mediocre so that everyone has a chance to pass). I walked out of high school speaking relatively good english. I needed to practice obviously, and that didn't come until years later, but, essentially, that's it.

When I talk w/ people back home, 95% of them can't speak english to save their life. Same lessons, same teachers.

Difference I guess is that I was obsessed with music and wanted to understand the lyrics, so I had an extra motivation. But my resources were the same as theirs. Outside of that, nothing. We didn't even have an english dictionary at home, my parents couldn't understand english, we didn't have cable/english tv...

So, anyway, most of those people I went to school with can't speak english.

Many will also tell you just how much they hated math and can't remember any of that stuff - not even to work with fractions.
A lot of them can't spell better than a 5th grade kid.
They know that Europeans came to America at some point and fought Indians.
If they try really hard they probably remember the name of 4 or 5 Canadian Prime Minister, beside the current one.
Art and music classes were just an excuse for them to waste time.
Many think that Africa is a country, because geography was BOOOOOOOORING...

So we have all those people w/ diplomas, and you can't help but wonder - what the heck did they learn in all those years?

But the worst part is that, it gives people a sense of entitlement because they've been told that they are "educated" when actually, all the knowledge they've managed to extract from all those years boils down to how to make carrot muffins or how to build a bird house.

One of the contestants, a  middle aged man, said "Goa"

I was very young and don't remember much more than
my folks telling me as we drove past that they
had been inside that building to have some paper work done and that it was
the building that Oswald shot the president from.

I'm not surprised that they wouldn't understand the question but I am
surprised that they would remember Jack.
I remember the televised Huntley Brinkley News reports very well....came on right before Bananza
with the Ford Mustang commercials LOL.

Oh...my dad bought the first '64 1/2 Mustang sold in our town- got a congratulations certificate from the
company...made him so happy he bought another one in 67 when they flipped the tail lights in :)

What a great car to learn in!

LOL Craig...but seriously, no. Both my folks worked hard and skimmed by.
I remember dad coming home from work pissed...he was driving a used Bug and
when he went to pass a slower driver they would speed up and whether or not we
could afford it he didn't have any trouble passing. It would out-run the local cops
too LOL..I know and at around 8yrs old I knew what "bury the speedometer" meant.

I too learned how to drive in that red '64 1/2 Mustang but I was somewhat younger Bapu.

We're all somewhat younger than Bapu, Michael.  But he's got an Alembic (whatever that is).

BTW - That Caddy was modified by my crazy millionaire uncle (who invented the glass elevator and was the chief mechanic on an Indy 500 car two years back in the 60's).  The limited slip was replaced with Positraction, wider tires were added to a shortened axle so they would hide, it had a Littlefield blower and it had dual Holly 780's with extra large secondaries (among other "extras" like an NOS kit for a short time).  It got up to 163 mph on a straight in El Cajon CA but looked stock (albeit a boat) - lol.  It was absolutely horrible to drive if you weren't going straight though!  It would float side-to-side at higher speeds and would always slide out when making a turn thanks to too much power and Ford transmission fluid.  I could scratch three gears though which made for some nice road graffitti.  Of course, the 33 gallon fuel tank only lasts so long at 5 mpg or less!

He literally said "you're only young once, try to stay out of trouble."

The first time we did a brake job we learned a whole bunch.
