Download from Command Center for install later on?

Probably a silly question....but where do you download the packages on the Command Center?  All I see are options to Uninstall, Reinstall, Roll Back and Delete Files.

If I want to get the various items off there in nice, neat, installable packages, (Sonar Platinum, L-phase EQ/Comp, Rapture, etc, etc), for when servers do finally go down (and we'll hopefully receive a "defeat" for the online authorization), am I just missing where the option is located?

Or does it not exist in that format?

And since everyone is also voicing opinions about this whole situation, it's a shame.  I've used one or two other DAW's very slightly (Reaper, and one other), but I've been using Cakewalk pretty much exclusively since the late 80's....and was able to see just how far it had come since those early days.  A pity that things are what things are.)

On your name in the online installer. It should take you to your account page on the cakewalk website. From there you should find a list of all your registered products and links to download pretty much everything.

I actually have that information going all the way back to Cakewalk v2.0 (for MS-DOS). I keep it in a spreadsheet. I never thought it would become an artifact of history - just a handy place to keep my rollback information. I've never actually needed to roll-back, as far as I can remember.

+1 The best thing we all can do right now is take the time, which might be a few hours, go to your products page and download everything and back it up to at least 3 hard drives.
Also as said- copy paste all the serial numbers to a txt document or make screen shots.
I made a txt documnt so everythings in one place
I copy paste the title of the item  then the serials and the date of purchase.

+1 Archiving all serial numbers and relevant info from CW Site.

For the first few large install files, I've instigated a "reinistall" in Command Center then stopped short at the prompt asking if I wanted to install now. By saying no, it has left the install file in my folder designated for such files. I will continue this and report back if there's any gotcha to this method. ( direct download from CW site will be the next most logical option)

Or does it not exist in that format?

When you Install or Reinstall using the Cakewalk Command Center (CCC) executable installers ARE downloaded to your PC.

Launch/run the CCC and click on the "gear" icon in the upper right corner.  This opens the "Setting" window.  Select the "Paths" Tab, and look for the "Command Center Download Path" information.  This is where the CCC downloads the installer files.  The default location (on a Win 7/10 computer) is:  C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\Command Center\Downloads.

To make sure I have backups of all of my product installers I have done the following:
1) deleted all files in the Download Path
2) Used the CCC to Install/Reinstall one single product -- e.g. Rapture Pro
3) After the product is installed I moved all of the installer files for that product to a unique directory -- e.g. C:\01_CW_Rapture_Pro_Installer
4) Making sure the Download Path is empty, then Install/Reinstall another product -- e.g. Sonar Platinum, and install and backup installer files
5) Repeat the steps above for all of the products you want to backup.

I also created a spreadsheet that lists each product, the lastest/last version of the product, and the Serial Number and Response Code (if available) for each product.

The end result is you have all the installers for all of your products.  What you are MISSING for some of them are Registration Codes, i.e. you still need to use the CCC to authorize the installs.  For example, I have the original Rapture for which I have both a Serial Number AND a Registration Code. I don't need the CCC for this product.  I also have the newer Rapture Pro, for which I only have a Serial Number (no Registration Code).  This means I still need the CCC and the Cakewalk Authorization Servers to reinstall some of my products.

In another thread it was mentioned by Cakewalk's CTO Noel Borthwick that IF Cakewalk Authorization Servers are ever shut down then all legal owners will be issued a file that will allow for authorizations:

I agree with this very strongly.  The serials/versions conundrum with the Sony ---> Magix changeover is still a nightmare for me.  I kept up with every version of VEGAS, Sound Forge, and ACID from their inceptions.  When Sony still held the rights, accessing those things was a breeze.  Right now, I'm hoarding installation disks, and haven't purchased any Magix updates for any of the programs yet. FWIW, Magix support of Sony products is horrible!

Another small detail that might be worth considering -- download the Mac versions of the Cakewalk software, just in case. I'm thinking mainly of the plugins (LP EQ, Rapture, etc) which have Mac versions, rather than the Sonar Mac port. You can usually find links to the Mac versions (when available) under Connected Products on the left side of the download screen.

You never know where you might end up, computer-wise. I don't anticipate moving to a Mac and Logic anytime soon, but stranger things have happened, and it would be nice to have some of those excellent Cakewalk products available to me if I ever do.

I have downloaded all software and registration codes.
But how do I acrivate the software - offline? Otherwise you are always in DEMO mode?
Every change on hardware, or an Microsoft update forces a re-activation.
How do I do this?

Well - the activation servers are promised to been kept on line. However - how long that will last is everyone's guess. They promised some activation patch/program in case those servers go off-line, but to be honest I would rather see them give me that patch/program right away. It's not that they have anything to loose anyway. I mean - since the EOL announcement it's nothing more than abandon-ware. Nobody in his right mind will buy Cakewalk software at this moment or later.

Therefore I asked in an other thread - where is the website hosted?
There was an update in the hosting at 2017-11-23  -  And the site was not reachable for a few hours.
The owner of the site is at the moment: Cakewalk Inc.

The offline activation should still work.  Steps are outlined here:

Of course, if the servers ever go down for good, then we can only hope that Noel is able to make good on his promise of providing a permanent activation code.

Re: Download from Command Center for install later on? 2018/01/06 14:40:05 (permalink)
As advised here, I have downloaded copies of all product install files from the My Products page.

I was going to do screen shots of the serial numbers and registration codes, but I wanted to be able to copy them as text later in the event of a re-install. I happened on a quick and dirty way to capture the My Product info as text.

I am using Microsoft Excel but I assume any spreadsheet software will work.  Select the rows of My Product info (upper left to lower right) and copy to the clipboard.  Then open a new worksheet and paste.  This process recreated the My Product info within Excel so all of the information is pasted into separate rows and columns.  There was too much space in the resulting rows and columns so I selected the whole sheet and used the Alignment Settings to set Horizontal to General and Vertical to Top.  Then I just adjusted the handles between columns to reduce the space within the columns.

Now I have a nice (easily created) copy of My Products, SNs, and Registration Codes.

This ^^

However CCC does good and fairly easy installation when on verbose installation.

Assuming they fix the license activation, and if I need to install on a new PC and servers are down I would...

1) Copy the downloads folder with all the installation files to new PC.

2) Install Cakewalk Command Center.

3) Run Cakewalk Command Center, tweak the settings for checking updates (turn off ideally) and set verbose mode. Any errors about not being able to download files I would ignore.

4) Install via CCC. Hopefully it would pick up files from the download folder.

That's what I hope would work. Here is to hoping.

The only thing you can be certain of is that you can currently install and activate your software on an existing system. The future is uncertain, and in this case it is definitely not infinite in duration. If the disk or system where that installation is running on goes belly up, and the online installer and activation system is no longer running, you will not even be able reinstall on your current machine. So it may be wise to get an offline activation file for your current machine and store that in a safe place as well.

As far as the status of the intellectual property goes, it is only abandonware if the owner decides to make it so. There are reasons why a product that is not producing revenue might be kept locked up and jealously guarded, instead of being left by the curb with a "take me for free" sign. One is that people who have a claim on your property might think it has some value to them or someone else. If your house is being foreclosed, you are not free to burn it down or invite in squatters. It is possible that someone might buy SONAR for cheap just to package it with hardware, for example. Another is that the copyright protects, not just the owner, but his competitors as well. If a full featured monster DAW like SONAR were suddenly to be released free to all comers, it might have a serious impact on the market, at least until technology has moved far enough to make it truly obsolete. Had you been offered SONAR, in its current state of development for free vs Cubase for $600+, it might have cost Steinberg a customer this year. Many users (as many have said on this forum) could happily use SONAR for at least a few years to come. It might be worth it for a competitor to bid at the sheriff's auction with the sole intention of tying up the copyright so that no one could legally offer it for free.
