    Hi Tim

I'm assuming you want to create some mp3 files?

The LAME encoder is useless on it's own, it needs a host program for it to run in.

Here are two very good and very free mp3 encoders:

    * C-DEX - quite a sophisticated encoder but well worth the money! CLICK HERE to download.

    * Shuangs Wave to Mp3 Converter - very quick and you can use drag and drop. CLICK HERE to download (it's second bottom on this page)

Do you have Windows Media Player? If so, you may be able to convert to MP3 with it. Look for the Windows Audio Converter in WMP options or right-click the song in WMP and select 'Send to Windows Audio Converter'.

Saving it as mp3 hasn't been a problem, but if you have to use the RIFF Wav file option before converting to an mp3, I had a hard time finding a converter that would accept it as a wav file. I finally got this one.

I have lame and it does a great job as a stand alone convertor. When you double click it does not open? If so then browse the file and convert.

Herb what is odd is that i downloaded Lame for both computers, and one setupa s a stand alone program and the other as a plug in for the DAWs. Kinda weird!

Hi Tim, the Shaung converter is great for the money and so simple to use. I use it mainly for doing quick conversions when I'm mixing a version of a project specifically for uploading as an mp3. It lets me get a lot of quick work-flow if I'm fiddling about in Home Studio trying to get the best sound for mp3 - often quite a different mix to what I'd export as a wave file.

Personally, I'd recommend giving the C-Dex a go - my results using it have been of a noticably better 'quality' even at identical bitrates. It takes much longer to produce the mp3, often up to a minute instead of the seconds it takes in Shuangs. Maybe this is the reason for the better result.

Plus it also allows Variable Bitrate Recording (VBR) - I'm still only at the experimental stage with this but I know there are a quite a few exponents of VBR in the forums here; anyway, it's another weapon in your arsenal of music production features.
