Driver Talk ...wtffff ..

Hi partners !!

Ok today i was testing a Focusrite Forte for my students ...and so i stress tested it ...and then check also drivers latency ...

As you may know i have a VS 700 , a UA1G , RME fireface 400 and a VS 100 (that i gave to my cousin ..student also)

while the forte is excellent in every aspect the driver latency sucks compared to the RME and also to my UA 1 G !!

i decided to check some i never did ..my VS 700 driver round trip latency and : bam WTF !!! it's even worst than the UA1G !!!!!

format : buffer size : roundtrip latency ( in -out)
RME :

512 : 26.4 ( 12.6 -13.8)

256: 14.8  (8.8-8.0)

128 :9 (3.9-5.1)

64 :6.1 (2.5-3.6)

FORTE

442 : 52.8 (21.4-31.4)

265 : 32.7 (13.4-19.4)

133 : 17.8 (7.4-10.4)

89 : 12.8 (5.4-7.4)

UA1G :

432 : 34.6 (13.8-20.8)

288 : 24.1 (10.6-13.5)

144 : 14.6 (7.3-7.3)

VS 700 :

512 : 45.5 (18.5-27.1)

256 : 28.9 (11.8-17.1)

128 : 18.3 (7-11.3)

So basically i alwayz encourage students to stick with Roland and RME as interfaces !! and the quadcapture and octacapture are real beast in the drivers area .....but wtf going on with the VS 700 !!!!

Can anybody check the number on its set up ....it on 44100hz sample rate //...

    Hi Zo!

I could replicate your figures for the VS-700 (see below). Identical numbers despite different PCs, not quite what I had expected. I had thought USB latency would also play a role ....

format = buffer size : buffer latency : round trip (in:out)

    VS-700
     48 : 1.1 :  8.7  (4.4 : 4.3)
     64 : 1.5 :  9.4  (5.1 : 4.3)
     96 : 2.2 : 11.9  (5.6 : 6.3)
    128 : 2.9 : 18.3  (7.0 : 11.3)
    256 : 5.8 : 28.9 (11.8 : 17.1)

Very interesting, though, is that the Octa-Capture reports almost identical figures

    Octa-Capture
     48 : 1.1 :  8.7  (5.6 : 3.1)
     64 : 1.5 :  9.5  (6.0 : 3.4)
     96 : 2.2 : 12.0  (6.7 : 5.2)
    128 : 2.9 : 18.4  (7.5 : 10.9)
    256 : 5.8 : 28.9 (10.4 : 18.6)

Furthermore, there is no difference if VS-700 and OctaCapture are synced (VS EXPAND) or VS-700 is by itself ... which is what I don't quite understand because the expanded mode definitely puts more strain on the system.

However, with the power of the new DAW I can run at buffer sizes of 48 (for tracking w/out too many plugs) and large projects at 64 - 96 which gives me a nice short round trip of 9 - 12 ms

Thks a lot Free for the time  ;) i appreciate ..it in the desert island of the VS 700 forum ...
Yep the RME is the reference !! but the conter part is that to mix heavy project you gotta increase the latency a lot ....but i can live with that ....

i'm seriously wondering if i keep the vs 700 for the main daw or use my RME (witch was for on the go) ..but losing my vs 700c monotring section is killing me ...i might go RME throw vs 700 for monitoring using both in conjuction ....

    Any babyface users ....?

The real stange thing is that the UA1G is better !! lol ...99 dollars and quikiest driver ...

Yeah Zo I get similar round trip figures and the MOTU was definitely better although I haven't bothered to compare since X2.

    Cheers.

    ASUS H270, i7-7700, JLM BA & 1290, LA2A Opto4, loads of guff.

Thks mully ...the things is that it's  stable and more than usable ,.....motu is good but less stable and the preamp and clock is not on the same league imho ....anyway i really think Cakewalk/roland should do better ...

For those interested ..the Forte focusrite is very good ...i will officially waranty it for my students ..performance wise it's not the best but it has all Professional needs ...: very good and stable drivers , cross platform , preamp/convertors REAL good , easy to use and set up ...very well build ...and the daw control is working with sonar X1 without any single problem ...great interface ...
