Drivers and encoder

I'm using guitar tracks version2 and the M-Audio black box
I'm having to use the latest driver to record drums and Guitar
And im having to use an older driver to record the Vocals

I was also wondering how I purchase an encoder so I can save my projects as MP3's

Hi there Graham, and welcome to the forum.

First off, is it Guitar Tracks 2 or Guitar Tracks Pro 2 you're using - it shouldn't make a great deal of difference but it's best to be specific.

For the drivers question, we'll need some more information:

    * How are you connecting your Black Box to your computer?

    * What are the signal paths you're using to record your guitar, drums and vocals?

    * Are the drums live, from an external drum 'machine' or drum loops?

    * What drivers are you using for each procedure - MME, WDM or ASIO4ALL?

    * What is the name of you computer's soundcard?

As to the mp3 encoder Graham, that's easy - and free!

For quick conversions, download Shaung's WAV to MP3 encoder from this link: http://www.shuangsoft.com/Shuangs_WAV_to_MP3_Converter.asp

For a more sophisticated encoder, which also allows variable bitrate conversions, try the excellent C-Dex - download from here: http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/?q=download

Another excellent encoder is Audacity, available at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

You will also need the Lame mp3 encoder (link provided). I often use it to convert .wav to .mp3, but it also can do a bit of mastering for you if you like. It seems a lot quicker than the one provided with GTP3 and, of course, there is the fact that it is *free*.

There is a program called "lame" that's pretty good. Google lame and mp3 to find it.

(The name makes me think of SteveScrumpyUK though.)

    'Lame' isn't a program Petey.

The Lame encoder needs a host program to run in.

    Yes.

For instance, Audacity can import wavs and other formats, but in order to export the file or convert it to mp3, you need to download an mp3 encoder. In this case, they recommend and provide a link to the LAME mp3 encoder. Once this is downloaded and put on your system, audacity can use it.

I guess the file "lame.exe" that converts my wav files to MP3s then isn't a program. Maybe GT3 isn't a program either?

My problem.  I was running Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 on an old IBM thinkpad.  When I installed the program the Mp3 drivers were automacially installed and I was able to move them to the top in the midi devices section.  The Thinkpad died so I installed it on my laptop running WinXP.  It installed fine but without installing the drivers.  I know that the Mp3's are old and probably can't be found on the internet anymore but my question is, Are there other new drivers I can download that will be compatable and allow me to run Cakewalk again?  I'll appreciate any suggesgtions.
