Dropout problem in SHS 6

Hello everyone,

I was recording a project yesterday and all went well, saved and closed. Opened the project today and am getting dropouts after about 10 seconds.  I have 1 session drummer track and 8 audio tracks in the project, no effects. All audio track are mono. All outputs go to the Emu 0404 usb, and I have tried all outputs to the master bus with the same problem. Set to 44.1khz and 24 bit. Have been away from Sonar for ages but recorded and played back fine all day yesterday. I have disabled the internet connection and also disabled the onboard sound card. Defragmented computer, no change. All settings in options audio and global are as they were yesterday. Any ideas?
Sorry about the long post.

what is your latency set to?
you list 1G of RAM in your signature (which is pretty low, I think that's the minimum for SHS6) but you don't list the CPU speed.

and what about your hard drive?  are you using only 1 hard drive?  what is it's speed?  how much space do you have on it?  when was the last time you defragged it?

    Hi Beagle,

Latency is set to 10 msec but I can't move the slider. Using asio by the way. Using the hard drive on the laptop, perhaps I should get an external hard drive for this. Also another gig of ram. Defragged today. CPU speed is 1.83 Ghz.

    What kind of CPU?
SHS6 on a 1.83 Celeron would be a bit of a push. A P4, maybe cozy, but not as much.
Open Task Manager. What does it show for CPU activity? It will most likely be different from what the SHS CPU meter shows.
Session Drummer2 isn't too hard on the CPU.
1Gb RAM may be light, but shouldn't be a problem. I run considerably more complex projects with 1Gb and several soft synths loaded.
Have you gotten any Microsoft Updates recently?
The reason I ask is that every time I have had a problem with my 0404PCI, it has been a direct result of a MS update.
So I am a big fan of System Restore. Back out, and move forward.
You can't adjust ASIO latency with the slider. You must use the ASIO panel.
That's all I can think of for now.

    Hi Robert,

It's an Intel Centrino duo. Task manager shows very light activity, 0-2% when I'm not doing anything and 6-9% when I'm playing the project. I just opened Sonar and played the project through several times without problem. I have no idea why it wasn't playing without dropouts earlier. I honestly haven't changed anything and now it sounds great again (well, for me anyway). Confused. I have had some windows updates recently, perhaps if the problems persist I will do a system restore.

Thanks guys and I'll chime in again if it happens again.

    Glad it's working again.
For lack of a more technical term, sometimes Windows just coughs up a furball.
A simple restart, and away you go.
