Dropouts during recording

I am recording using sonar 6 PE, windows Vista, Mackie Onyx Blackbird firewire interface and presonus digimax preamp.  the computer is a dual core AMD laptop.  The system runs fatastic while recording 8 simultaneous tracks. It was running really well while recording 12 track simultaneaously for a an hour or so and then I started experiencing lots of dropouts.  I know the machine is only capable of recording so many at a time, however I am wondering why it worked for a while and then started dropping out.  I have stopped all services on the computer and turned everything off which i do not need. i have the internet disabled etc. I have looked at the option in the mackie control panel but didn't see anything. Any suggestion  how I could optimize sonar to record the 12 track simultaneously ?

I also have sonar 8 LE, but it seems it only allows 8 track simul recording.

    ok,..
when it runs fine for an hour then there is probably no need to increase the write2disk-buffers.. but it's not a bad thing either.. just double them and try..
also, check your energy-saving-options..  make sure nothing will be shut down after 60minutes !
then, and I can't believe I am saying this,.. defrag your HD (I am one of the people that don't believe in "defrag", but in your case it might help)

It's the Folgers Dark Roast- You should only drink organic / free trade grown coffee, Folgers is heavily sprayed and they don't pay One Ball Dez enough to feed the donkey .....

Frank's suggestions are excellent,  and also see how much room is left.
Have you run the DPCLAT meter to test for latency issues?

    options-audio-advanced tab ? (don't remember anymore)
somewhere there are two fields.. one for writing and the other for reading buffers..
    plus a cache-option to check..
I'd go with something like 512 samples buffer.. (or higher)

Recording 12 tracks for over an hour is such a job that info on your hard drives would be interesting.
We are talking about dozens of gigas of data. Franks suggestion of defragging might be very relevant, as is the one on checking all the energy saving settings.

If the dropouts start at exactly at one hour, then it's most likely something to do with energy saving.

Do you have the 64 bit or 32 bit version of SONAR installed?

How was it with the 2 gig file size limit ? Was it OS bit depth dependent or is it the software versions bit depth thats important?

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
