Dropouts!

On my 32 bit XPsp3 system I have a project with 2 midi tracks and a Cakewalk TTS-1 track. Before I even push Play I get a DropOut. Wnen I do push play, it stutters and drops out repeatedly. I have not changed any settings to cause this.

Delete soft synth track. DropOut!

Create new project. Insert MIDI track. Insert soft synth track. DropOut!

I thought DropOuts were audio related.

If your latency setting is normal, you can try to increase the dropout tolerance time.

Preference - configuration file - DropoutMsec (the last entry)

Change from the default of 250 - to 500 or so.

Tried that. No help. Let me add that the new projects have blank tracks - NO data in them.

I will try these files in 8.3 and see what happens.

    What is your soundcard?

Do you have some other process running in the background? Check Windows - Task Manager.

A dropout means your computer or soundcard can't keep up with the data you're trying to process.

Happens in 8.3 too. Yes I think there's a conflict with the soundcard. It's an old Audigy 2 Zs that worked fine up till now.

These issues started a while after I upgraded to a new hard drive with a disk image from Paragon which may be partially to blame. It may be time for a replacement or a compplete format/reinstall of everytning.

There's your problem. SoundBlasters are no good.

daveny5 may have already analyzed the problem, but for others, it is often good to open task Manager and wath your CPU usage as a project plays.  I was really struggling with static and drop-outs and by looking at the CPU meter and various projects, determined that freezing Hollywood Strings resolved the issue in most cases.  In one other case, when I had many (12-15) VIs, freezing a couple resolve the issue, although Hollywood uses as much as any 15 others combined.

Also, I think it is normal to get some glitch if you open or add soft synths while a project is playing.

Thanks for all the ideas... But the tracks have no data! They're Blank! Empty! Nothing! Nuba! Nil! Void! Zippo! Ziltch!

There is nothing there to trigger, cause, spark, hint, or otherwise insinuate a DropOut.

    >>open task Manager and wath your CPU usage as a project plays<<
Don't have to push play! There's nuthin' to play.

    >>There's your problem. SoundBlasters are no good<<
If that were the case then my cheapy laptop soundcard would be giving me headaches too and it's not.

Soundblasters work fine I've used them for years, rock solid and glitch free. It wouldn't cause this unless it had reached the end of it's long and faithful life.

I believe this is a disk image issue. If I still have the problem after reformating the HDD and reinstall everything, I will either start fresh and new; relent to laptop production only; or take up underwater basket weaving.
