Dropouts on Sonar Home Studio 6

Just set up Sonar on a new laptop with an Echo Audiofire 4 interface. When I record to an old project, which I copied from my old computer, no problem. But when I create a new project, I'll get a dropout anywhere from a few seconds to 1:30 into recording.

Here's my info:

CPU: Intel Core2 Duo 2.53GHz (P8700)
Memory: 4GB DDR3-1066 (2 sticks)
Operating System: Windows XP Professional
Primary Hard Drive: 500GB 7200rpm SATA2
I believe my sound card is Realtek High Definition Audio. I tried adjusting the buffer size, but that didn't help. I have nothing else running on this machine.

Any ideas what could cause this?

your soundcard SHOULD be the echo audiofire, not the realtek.  you should not be using the realtek for anything at least in SHS.

if you are not using your realtek for playback, we can solve the problem easily, but if you are using your computer speakers connected to the onboard realtek, then you need to either connect the speakers up to the audiofire or use headphones on the audiofire only and do not use the realtek.  when I tell you how to change to ASIO driver mode, the realtek will not work inside SHS.

do this, change to ASIO drivermode:
    OPTIONS>AUDIO>ADVANCED>DRIVER MODE = ASIO
    close SHS
    restart SHS

that should get you to using the audiofire only and should eliminate your problems, if it doesn't, there's a little more tweaking we can do.

    Thanks, Beagle!

I'm not sure how to tell what my soundcard is, but from what you said, I think Audiofire is my soundcard, not Realtek. I say that because:

    1. My driver mode is already ASIO.
    2. On OPTIONS>AUDIO>DRIVERS, I can only see Audiofire drivers.
    3. My record and playback timing masters are both Audiofire.

So, if that's the case, what else could explain my problem? Is it strange that the problem doesn't occur on old projects that I transferred over from my previous laptop?

Raise your ASIO buffers to 512 or something.
yuo can also try WDM driver mode and adjust the latency slider until the pc performs good. do the same with the ASIo buffers. adjust until you find a sweet spot.

You just cannot use the default settigns. you also need to go to echo's web site and download the latest drivers to date for yuor windows

I've read an awful lot about how to avoid dropouts in SHS6XL here at the Forums. I've increased my buffers. I've altered my latency up and down.  I STILL get frequent dropouts. The good news is that it very rarely happens at a critical time, and proves to be little more than inconvenient. A message box pops open, I close it and continue with scarcely a hitch. It's merely annoying. I've learned to live with it.

Sorry for the delayed reply, but I was out of town for a while. In any case, I've tried all of the above and still get dropouts, but I did notice something. I get the dropouts only when I use the audio metronome (as opposed to the MIDI metronome). Does that make any sense?
