annette - you're showing the track view with the PRV tool active. what view are you trying to be in? the PRV above that strummy has or the normal track view? if the normal track view, there's an icon on the toolbar which will take the PRV view off of the track view - I can't remember what the icon looks like. if you're after the REAL PRV view, then just go to VIEW>PIANO ROLL

Have you had chance for another run through Annette?

Looking at your screenshot, I think Beag might be on to something - have you opened the 'real' PRV?

OKay, I started over again. Here's a print screen of what I have now.



When you said to select the PRV Icon, I picked it from the track, but I don't get the piano keys. The lower screen is what I get when I select VIEW>PRV...neither looks like the screen you had up?

I do have sound.

That looks right!

You can also get there using the 'real' PRV icon - I've copied your toolbars Annette and here's where yours is:




To close the PRV and go back to the Track View, you can either close the PRV by hitting the X in the top right of its window as per any window or just click on the Tracks View icon, here's where yours is:




Just check you can move between the two easy enough - (just out of preference, I find it keeps things easier if I work with the PRV maximised)

I think you have to customise which toolbars you see in the PRV Annette.

First off, go to Views > and make certain Show Toolbars is checked - that should bring up the stuff you normally see in the Track View.

If that doesn't work however, go back to the Track View and select Views > Toolbars and make a note of the ones you have open; then go back to PRV and check them off in the Views menu.

OK, I explained it badly I think!

Try this Annette:

* Open your project and get the Track View open - all your toolbars should be visible?

* Now click on the PRV icon I labelled on your image to open it

* Maximize the PRV - (use the  as in any window)

* Now click on Views in the menu bar and make certain the Show Toolbars option is checked

I see that now sorry LOL....I thought there were more toolbars sepcific to PRV but maybe not.

Yeah I just cottoned on to that Bob - I only ever use the PRV, and the console view for that matter, maximised.

Is it a full drum track or do you rough it in first and go back later to fill it all in?

I'm just starting to use the drum track myself, but I believe most do a rough track first and then fill it in later when rest of the song is completed.

When I start a new project, the first thing I do is find the tempo I want. I have already learned the basic song on guitar or piano so I know how fast I want it. Click the metrnome toolbar and you'll get a small display, and one of the buttons is something like "Click to find tempo". You click that button with your mouse at the tempo you want the song, and it will display the tempo in beats per minute (BPM). It might be something like 127.926 BPM, but I ususally round it (I like whole numbers ).
Once the tempo is set, I create a simple drum beat as my click track; just kick, snare and high hat. Remember, once you start recording audio to a MIDI beat, it's not so easy to re-set the tempo without doing a lot of other things to get the audio in sync without funny noises, so make sure you have the right tempo.
Once the song is nearly finished, I dress up the drum track, breaks, fills, etc.
