Drum Replacer multiple samples? different hit strengths

Hi folks, I have addictive drums 2 and some nice kits, there are some really nice wav collections with several formats of different hit volumes.  Apparently there are a few standards for this, but drum sample collections come in different "formats" that work with say drumagog, trigger or sampletank .  etc.  Anyway the technology seems to use different samples for lighter drum hits then just reducing the volume of the same sample.  There is probably a lot more to this but I think that is how they approach natural sound to some extent.  ANYWHO.  What I am wondering is a) does drum replacer support that type of thing (multiple samples), if not , should it? and what type of standard can/should it use?

If there is a standard for how these are done, I just would hope drum replacer could support that if it does not.

So does drum replacer just trigge the sample quieter?

I am not saying it should or should not,  actually as long as the midi export works well I can use a different drum plugin.  I am just wondering. Maybe drum replacer could be "pointed" to another drum plug in to send the midi to it like a midi track?  then developers could stay off the endless train of being asked to develop a full drum sample sensitivity replacement deal inside sonar.  That might be something to put on the request voting site.  Direct midi to VSTI  from drum replacer.

Drum Replacer uses sfz files when using multiple samples. sfz files are plain text, open one up and you will see how velocity affects which samples are triggered. The sfz files can reference wav, ogg, aif or flac files. The sfz files are stored in folders by kit piece in "Cakewalk Content\Drum Replacer\Drums"

thanks! So sample packs like drum drops for instance that come in all these formats.  "Battery 3, Kontakt 5, EXS24, Maschine, Geist Studio One's Impact, Ableton Drum Rack, Reason Refills, Renoise ,idrum and the free TX16Wx sampler but it can be used in any DAW, drum machine or sampler that reads 24 bit WAVs"   So I would/should have to program my own SFZ file handling and get the basic wavs and organize them etc.?

If you want to play around with some you can use the Session Drummer 3 Flac files. They can be found at: Program files-> Cakewalk-> VSTPlugins-> Session Drummer 3->Contents -> Kits-> double click a kit to find the flac files. For 32 bit browse to Program files x86.

When in doubt whether a vendor supports sfz format, ask them. Drum Drops does not mention sfz explicitly. It is possible to create sfz files from any of the audio formats mentioned above.

One of Cakewalk staff, Bill Jackson, built a toolkit to create sfz files from drum synths like AD2. You might want to check it out. The toolkit is called CwDrSfzMaker it can be found in the SONAR Utilities thread http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3238243

"When in doubt whether a vendor supports sfz format, ask them" good idea just did.  And thanks for the link to Bill Jackson tool!!!!!  I want to check it out, I have what one might call a plethora of drum samples from way back yonder. (back when they used animal skin and bones)

    My $.02:

If you want to use samples from another drum synth with DR, I think it will be easiest in most cases to just extract the MIDI to a MIDI track(s) driving that synth. Then you can take advantage of all the multi-sampling, round-robining, velocity curving, soundshaping, bleeding, sympathetic resonating, mixing, etc features that are built into the synth with no effort beyond ensuring you extract or drum-map the MIDI to the correct note numbers. If someone else has already built SFZ files for a drum kit it makes sense to take advantage of DR's ability to use them, but if you own the synth that you want to sample, you might as well just use it with MIDI from DR.

As an add-on tip, instead of moving or rearranging any SFZ I added access to S1 Drum SFZ and Session Drummer 3 SFZ to drum replacer by just creating windows shortcuts in those drum replacer folders.  (S1 drum SFZ are not grouped by intrument so the shortcut just goes to the main SFZ folder).

Works well for me, however I might add shortcuts in those two folders to get the browser back the drum replacer default folders to work in the other direction, if that makes sense cuz its nice to hope around virtually instead of moving or copying stuff.

Oh and as for extracting midi, that's what I do currently, I thought it might be helpful if drum replacer just pointed directly to any VSTI as a midi input without that copy step so I put in the voting section as an enhancement.
