Drum replacement.

We just did a recording session with the band but the drummer has a fault on his TD-12 kit that causes slight distortion on the outputs.

Whilst this is OK for live use, it's bugging the hell out of me trying to get the sound I want in the mix with a "farting" kick drum sound.

I took the precaution of recording the MIDI output from the kit but now realise that his kit uses cc-4 to control the hi-hat opening and closing.

So I guess the question is does anyone know how to make use of this MIDI track in Addictive Drums or EZ Drummer (I can get everything except the hi-hats sounding good) or, alternatively, can I use Sonar (6) to replace the kick drum without spending my hard earned cash on buying Drumagog.

You can use Audio Snap to convert the transients from the kick track to midi data. Then use that to trigger the sample of your choice.

I don't understand... if you have the midi already what keeps you from using that to trigger a new sound ?

I need to keep the hi-hats intact, so I need to find a way of extracting the kick from the original audio track and replacing it with a decent one, or finding a way of using the MIDI data to reproduce the original hi-hat triggering as far as the different degrees of opening and closing go. I can't find a way of getting either of my drum VSTi's to understand the cc-4 data given out by the TD-12.

Why not just copy the kick events to a new midi track or use a drum map to send it to a differnt VSTi ? Just because all the midi is on the same track doesn't mean you can't split it out... that's the main reason to have midi, it lets you do that kind of thing.

Superior 2.0 from Toontrack uses CC4 data for HH control.

i think Ez drummer can also understand the CC4 for opening and closing hihat. You just have to find out what the note number is for the variable hihat in ezdrummer, the change it in your midi track. in other words change the existing hihat note in your midi track to the variable hihat note in ez drummer.

Is the unit defective... or is the distortion simply a matter of improper gain-staging inside the TD-12?
If it's the later, you can tweak the levels/compression/EQ on the TD-12... and use the original MIDI performance to re-record the TD12 sounds.

If you get into major drum replacement needs, Drumagog is hard to beat.

Since you have the MIDI, use Interpolate and change the Hi Hat's to what ever you need them to be.

BFD2 can handle variable HH (using CC4) or discrete notes that trigger open, closed, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 samples. It is simply an option in the setting page.

You can also use the included BFD2 groove editor to convert HH hits that are single note / velocity + CC4 messages to discrete notes.

BFD2 also contains a ready to use TD12 key map that only need to have the velocity curves adjusted to taste.
