Drum replacment software advise needed!!

I am working on a recording project and just cant get a couple of drums (live drums) to sound right. thinking of using drum replacement software. I do have BFD2 which has increadable samples. Never have replaced real drums with samples. I don't want to spend another $300 on this either. What options fo I have?

There is a 100 dollar version of trigger from steven slate. Cheapest I can think of. You can use the hit detection in Sonar to generate midi from the seperate drum tracks and then feed BFD. Toontrack's Drumtracker is an option too.

Slate Digital Trigger rocks for easy, great sounding drum replacement. There is a cakewalk video on drum replacement using audio snap. You create midi from the hits using audio snap and route the midi track to BFD. Either way is effective but Slate Trigger is less work.  I hope this helps.

Yeah, man check out the Drum Production webinar. If the drum tracks are isolated just following what they did should make it pretty easy to swap things out.

Convert your audio drum tracks to midi then add the drum sounds you want. Works good for me when doing it andits all SONAR Stuff  ;)

Are all your components recorded on seperate tracks?  (Kick, snare, etc...)
If so shouldnt take but a very short time to do.

when I check out a thread with a question, I always look at the already existing answers to be sure not just  to repeat what's already been said.

no offence, but.. ..am I the only one doing this..?

I almost always replace my audio kick drum with MIDI, Audio snap is straight forward for this. Once you have your MIDI track you can easily edit and delete false triggers. CLeans it right up. Then I just fire up a few drum VST's until I find the one I like. Believe it or not , I've been using a modified Kick from TTS-1 lately.

yes, had 8 mics going, kick, snare, toms and 2 overheads.  Thanks all for the advise. I am going to try the audio snap first. I like the idea of keeping it all in sonar, session drummer. May use bfd, but session drummer has some pretty good sounds. hate to buy more drum software. to be honest, i bought bfd becuase i did not know of session drummer. Session drummer is very cool and very easy to use!! so I will try that route first. will let post my expereice.  thanks again, this forum ROCKS!!!!!

BFD has better raw samples. You should try both SD3 and BFD. Especially if you only have the kits that came with X1 for SD3. If you have both you have some massive choices and power behind you. Also there is nothing stopping you from blending kit pieces on their own tracks. Just clone the first track and toss a different piece onto the new track and blend the two. You can get some crazy stuff happening that way. Cheers.

ok.... i have searched to find audio snap. Have searched the user manual for "audio snap" and didn't find it.  Searched all of the tool bars, didn't find it. searched the help in sonar, found an article that talks about it but doesn't tell me where to find it. can ya help a brother out here?

If you open the Piano Roll View you should see the notes for the kit pieces. Also if you press F1 (I think it is F1) with SD3 in focus it should open the SD3 help manual and there is a a default map in there somewhere. The SD3 GUI should tell you the kit piece midi notes too. Sorry but I forget how exactly I did all that crud before but those are some places to poke at and see what works for you. Cheers.

What beepster said, he's a fast typist. Also in the PRV right-click on the keyboard, in the note names dialog click the "Use These Note Names Instead" radio button and select the "General MIDI Drums" from the dropdown. Then the keys will show the drumkit names instead of piano keys.

Most SD3 kits are pretty much General MIDI (uses the same notes as GM) so you can likely use a GM Drum Map unless it's a specialized kit or one you purchased.

If you right-click on any drum piece in SD it will tell you what the MIDI notes are.

piano roll shows the names of the drums (snare, kick etc.) don't know how to find a midi map. f1 didn't work. SD3 indicates a number like "41" however the audiosnap is wanting an alpha numeric "B#" or similar. The kick is B3, cant seem to find the midi notes.

That mapping is in the SD3 help. Bring the SD3 GUI in focus and click F1. Under "Using the Mixer" click on "Using the drum pads" then scroll down a bit, the map is there.

Are you sure the help is not hidden somewhere on your screen? You can also bring up the help by going where the SD3 help is located on your hard drive and open the chm file. The default location for 64bit SD3 is c:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Vstplugins\Session Drummer 3\Documentation

It's in there, dude. We wouldn't lie to, ya. Make sure you actually have the SD3 GUI in focus (just click anywhere on the SD3 window) and the click F1. Also check your windows task bar like scook said. It may be the help topic didn't pop up to the front. Also be aware that it is a PDF file so you need to have a PDF reader installed like Adobe Reader to view it. Otherwise it will just be a notepad doc with a bunch of wacky numbers and stuff in it.

beepster, your SD3 help is a pdf? The file on my system at "c:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Vstplugins\Session Drummer 3\Documentation" is called SessionDrummer.chm. That is the one the F1 key brings up. Directly clicking on the file should bring it up in the help viewer.

Well pretty much all of my manuals seem to be PDFs or something similar because I had to install Adobe to actually see them (I built my own rig so I didn't have anything except Win7 Pro). I've never seen or heard of the .chm extension before this. It's likely the same as what I have but generally if I try to open a doc or manual and it shows up all wonked I just open it with Adobe and all is well.

Yea, the manuals that come with SONAR are pdfs. A lot of the plugins have their own help files. They are Compiled HTML files, i.e. standard windows help files that use the Windows help viewer. In your slack time, you might want to poke around the Cakewalk directory tree, just to see what is there.

Heh... yeah, I've poked at it a bit. I've pretty much found everything I need for now. Eventually I'd like to figure out all this .dll mayhem you guys seem to always be screwing around with... but for now things are good and I have more than enough on my plate. Really wish I could take a look at the X2 manual though.

You could read the TH2 manual, it is available from Overloud.
