I use the Kontakt versions and they are quite nice. Not as many layers as some of the better drum libraries, like BFD3, but for quick and dirty complete kits they work very well in a mix. Kontakt, and by implication, anything that loads into Kontakt works great with Platinum.

Thank you for your reply. I use BFD3 now, but was interested in trying out some of the DrumDrop snares. I don't have a Kontakt player, but there are alternatives. Some of the samples I think can be loaded into BFD, so I may give those a shot. Thanks again, Bob

Some of them come in BFD format as well. But they still are not as detailed as those from, say Platinum Samples or Fxpansion's London Sessions. Regards, Dan

I have a place in my heart for DrumDrops because approximately one million years ago, I used DrumDrops on cassette to make recordings for demos and live shows on a 4-track PortaStudio. I would feed DrumDrops into the PortaStudio with the vari-speed set accordingly, and pause the PortaStudio whenever I wanted to fast forward or rewind the DrumDrops cassette to another section to create the song structure I needed. I had to redo from the start if the splice I made with the pause button didn't sound smooth. (The vari-speed was for slight tempo adjustments.)
This in no way helps you with your question. I just go way back with DrumDrops and like them for that reason.

Nick from Drumdrops here. The Kontakt packs use the same amount of samples as the BFD packs. Dan, I would be interested to know which kits you have and why you think they are not detailed enough ? All of our first kits had 16 velocities for each articulation and then we included 5 round robin variations which basically makes it 80 velocities per articulation. Which we feel is pretty good. We have started recording later kits with 24 velocities and 5 round robins so that basically brings the velocity count up to 120. I don't think other companies are including many more than that. If you look at say our Gretsch Round Badge soul kit - this has 16,000 samples included. Which is quite a lot of detail. Think it works well. If we can improve though, we would always try to - so let me know what you are hearing and we can take a look at the kits in the future.

Hi Nick! Cool to see you guys on here. I was referring to some of the expansions available for BFD3 with as many as 256 velocities layers, not that that makes them magical or anything. Never meant that yours were not good, in fact I have at least 3 or 4 kits from you guys. What I am hearing, is that the lower velocities don't seem to have as much differentiation as some kits from other companies, so softer passages need some midi massaging to get the best results. The Drumdrops kits I have are for Kontakt, not BFD3, if that matters. Regards, Dan

Thanks for the feedback. We can certainly look at the lower velocities to see if we can improve them. I had a quick look around at Platinum. Most of there kits are 16 to 19 velocities and 4 round robins (so similar to ours - we tend to be doing 5 round robins now and 24 velocities). I saw one of there kits said 256 velocities which I am kind of intrigued by. Its almost impossible for a drummer to hit that many velocities. He must have been there all week :) On a few of the BFD expansion packs I see they say 300 samples per articulation which sounds pretty realistic and again the same as what we do (5 round robins, 16 velocities, close mic, room mic, overheads = about 300 samples). I think most drum sample companies are maybe in the 24 velocity, 5 round robin region... This seems a realistic amount to record, edit and I don't think users will hear a lot of difference above this. We can certainly look at the lower velocities though. It would be good to have those sounding just as good as the others. Any other feedback is always appreciated. We are recording a new kit tomorrow so I will chat to my engineer.

I would love to take up the Kudos and say we are the same Drumdrops. The original Drumdrops is a different company. We have all their vinyl and they inspired us to continue what they did. Hopefully we have replicated what they did and made it more applicable to the internet age. Our ethos is the same as there's. Killer vinyl though !
