EPIC Cover Song: Deep Purple's "Lazy"

This is the most ambitious cover I've ever done.  It features an all star cast of Randy Prier (rsp@odyssey.net) on vocals, Jon Bouy on drums, and David Townsend (Bitflipper) on Hammond XK-1 organ.  I play all electric guitars and bass guitar, and I did mix.

I can't thank these guys enough for the tremendous contributions they made to bring this project to the heights that they achieved, and to help fulfill a 37 year old dream of covering this tune.

I proudly present "Lazy".   Crank it up.

    Hi, Mark,

Wow, guys, absolutely SPECTACULAR!  Everybody did a killer job on this, which is one of my all time DP favorites.  The performances were fantastic and the mix sounds excellent.

Mark's guitars sound great as always, Randy's vocals are right on the money, Jon's drums are really AMAZING, and Dave's playing and tone on the B3 absolutely nailed the song!  Jon Lord would be proud (and probably a little afraid that Dave might take his job!).

    Pure dynamite, guys, well-done!

Oh, and a Very Merry Christmas to all of you!

    Well done guys...
This brought back a lot of good old memories...
I must have played this tune a million times back in the 70's... One of my favorites...
Everyone did a great job... Mix is fine...
My only gripe is; I think it should  swing more...
I haven't listened to the original in decades, but we always played it with a lot more of a shuffle feel...
Don't get me wrong... everyone played great, and I really enjoyed it...
    Excellent collaboration...

Wow... this is sweet..... still in the intro..... very nice...... tone and timing are very good.  I was digging the tone on the B3.....

Deep Purple..... one of my early influences..... Blackmore on guitar.........  I saw DP after RB left them.....

All in all a good cover......

I was waiting to see if you would go for the high notes in the vox.... nope..and I can't blame ya...I don't think to many singers can hit those notes.................. the guitar tone is pretty close to what I remember.

Ah, it's finally arrived!! That intro is CRAZY!!! (Did you put that organ through an amp sim???) Everything is really tight which for this arrangement I'm sure was very difficult on an internet collab.

Drum performance is great, guitar sounds nice and clean - well tracked - and the bass is smokin. Vocals are great. Mix is awesome... MP3 sounds so good I bet the .wav is sweet.

Fantastic job to all of you - enjoyed every second of it!!

wow - this is excellent!  dave, that organ is incredible!  was this a mic'd Hammond B3?  how did you mic it?
Jon - very nice drums!  this is up to your usual excellence!
randy - this isn't as "heartfelt" as "Oh Holy Night" was, but you really pulled it off!  seriously, this was really good!  I too, wanted to hear you wail those high notes, but I fully understand the absence of them!  it's still a great rendition!  bravo!
mark - you never cease to amaze me with your guitar talent!  this was incredible!  bass was excellent as well!
the mix is quite good as well!

    great job guys!

Very impressive - great work guys.  And the end result has a very authentic feel.

I did a solo album with Ian Gillan in the early '90s (that story in the CH about the 'follow through' on a high note was him!).  Anyway, the secret to those high notes was PG Tips tea, steeped only for about 30 seconds and some honey.  Lot's of takes and a few headaches (plus change of underwear)...

Ah , i love the music of this classic purple line-up and it does'nt get much more classic than this track.

This track is amazing  and you've all played magnificently.

There were times when i thought your guitar was Blackmore as you got some of his nuances off to a tee.

Great vocals, and although they don't get as high as gillan, they sound really good here and do the song full justice.

The keyboards are amazing too. Jon lord would definitely approve i reckon

Some nice solid drumming by Jon bouy.

Excellent work all-round guys, brought back some memories and i rally enjoyed it.

    was this a mic'd Hammond B3?

Nope, it's a Hammond XK-1, direct in. The Leslie, the distortion - all fake, all the XK-1's built-in effects. I added some automated Sonitus delay and reverb after tracking, plus my favorite trick and until now a closely-guarded trade secret: Kjaerhus Classic Chorus on the reverb return.

thanks for replying - that's great info because it was done really well!  did you draw in CC's for the leslie or use the mod wheel or how did you do that?  how did you do the distortion?  inquiring minds want to know!

did you draw in CC's for the leslie or use the mod wheel or how did you do that? how did you do the distortion?

    I cheated a little.

Jon Lord gets that screaming distortion by overdriving a Marshall 100W head and severely stressing the Leslie's speakers. This is not an option for me, as all I have is a knob to turn for the XK's built-in distortion effect, which is hard to manage while playing. Furthermore, Lord does a lot of drawbar manipulation in real time which further complicates the performance.

So I cheated by recording the part as MIDI and then operating the distortion, Leslie and drawbar controls during playback. It's like having an extra hand. Hey, if we can have three-armed drummers in songs, why not 15-fingered keyboard players?

Yeah, thanks for the 'behind the scenes' bitflipper.  The sound had me completely fooled due to the subtle variations in the distortion and drawbars.  Did I mention the playing was top drawer as well?

This is crazy good you guys.  Wow!  I'd love to see this played live by you four!

Dave, I read somewhere else how you listened to this for 3 days to get it in your head, then you played it.  Brilliant!  Obviously the talent was there first.  Wow!

Jon, you make EZD sound really good there too!     Sheesh...we non-drummers could learn a few things listening to this track.

Randy, I had to ask if this was you singing because it sounds different than other songs I've heard you sing.  I think it's cool when singers can sound different from song to song as the song calls for it.  Great job.

Wow Mark--great mix and killer guitars!
