EQ Problems

Hi people. Actually I am currently learning how to use EQ in my Sonar X1 Producer DAW. My question is, how can I master EQ? I have books on Mixing Audio Concepts, Practices and Tools... but that book is just way too advance for me. May I know where can I start to develop a good ear for EQ? Thanks.

I would be in the same league as you in that I find it hard to EQ master.

I would say you gotta use reference tracks in a good music environment and twiddle the eq for hours everyday until you know how it translates!!!

    Good luck,

working with sonar sometimes requires a high EQ (emotinal quotient) . More about it here
    now to the real:
well, equalization is a wide field. the first question imho should be: does my music really need equing?
An equalizer is a filter, so one should use it with care and should first read about, for example, frequencies and the instruments' frequency range. I would start with one or two instruments, listen to their sound (single and together) and listen, listen, listen how they refer to each other; is one of the instruments  to loud? First turn the fader down simply, before you start an 'orgy in eqing' and so on....you can even watch some nice videos on youtube, sometimes they're really helpful..

Using a reference track, as Cian states, is very helpful. Complimentary EQ (cutting frequencies in one track that you boost in another) is a good way to make room for the various elements in a mix and avoid masking. Hi-pass and Low-pass filters can also be very useful in eliminating unnecessary frequencies.

There are plenty of tutorials on YouTube that go into the nitty gritty of these approaches. Groove3's Mixing with Sonar might also be helpful if you want something specific to your DAW and the tools that come with it.

to work properly with EQ in an effective manner, you should train your ear to be able to determine the frequency that needs fixing and by how much. It is not useful to set there adjusting the EQ without a good idea as to which frequency is causing the problem.

Here is a link to a free game that is called "Mr Soundman". You might find it helpful in learning to determine the frequency that is out of balance in an audio sample.  http://www.v-plugs.com/mr_soundman

If you can't hear the out of balance frequency, you are fighting an uphill battle and when you adjust the wrong frequency, you have just made the problem worse.
