EQ/Equalizer Plugin for Sonar
Can anyone recommend a good VST Equalizer for Sonar Plat? The provided ones, including proChannel, have far more artifacts that I would expect. I'd prefer an EQ with a spectrum analyzer to help me stay oriented, but it's not critical. Thanks in advance for any suggestions Allan

If you want a REALLY nice EQ for little money, you can get Bx_Digital 2 for $99 right how... https://www.plugin-alliance.com/en/products/bx_digital_v2.html
Add the SPL Attacker for $9 and the price drops to $86.40...which is like getting Attacker free and still saving $13...

One of the best EQ's out there is Fabfilter Pro Q2...but pricey at $199... unless you already own FF plugs..then the price is adjusted based on what you own... There are a LOT of good EQ's... Here's a boatload of FREEBIES you can try to see if any are to your liking http://www.vst4free.com/index.php?plug-ins=EQ

What kind of artifacts are you getting with the ProChannel stuff? Just curious.

I was also wondering about these artifacts. Also, doesn't the QCurveEQ have a spectrum analyser?

Yes, it has a fly out analyzer. I have never heard any type of artifacts from the EQ's. In my opinion, they are quite good.

A very good value for a clean digital EQ is the Acon Digital Equalize plugin. It goes on sale regularly for well under $100. Cheers, Eddie

I bought the Waves H-EQ. It's very much like the bundled Quad Curve but has more options. I'm down grading to Pro at the end of the year so I bought this EQ specifically to replace the Quad Curve. It was on sale for $49.

but the Waves plugins require either iLok or Pace (?) licensing manager. I have a small handful of Waves plugins that I got on a no brainer deal. but I've lost my USB drive that the license manager for it was on, so I've never reactivated them. I have found the prochannel EQ to be quite sufficient for my use. I have never heard any artifacts from it myself.

my guess is, there are no artifacts, that this is noise coming from some other source. otherwise, there would be countless posts about 'artifacts in stock sonar vst's', and there just aren't any. unless alanh has the ULTIMATE EARS which is possible....

If the quad curve had mid/side it would be use more often here. I still use it on individual tracks, but mid/side would be a great update one of these months.

I seriously doubt the ProChannel equalizers exhibit any audible artifacts, Allan. If you're hearing something out of the ordinary, I'd suggest investigating that before spending money on EQs. Try the Sonitus EQ. No spectrum graph, but it's a good EQ. If you're determined to get a different equalizer, FabFilter Pro-Q2 is about the best there is, IMO. Pricey, but very, very good.

Actually, Waves just severed their relationship with Pace but invented their own, equally fragile, copy protection scheme. Licensing remains Waves' Achilles' heel.

ProChannel should not introduce unwanted artifacts unless it is overdriven. Can overamp any eq especially midrange and get dirt, more distortion, clipping, overdrive as an artifact from Sonar being pressed beyond what it was supposed to do. Not the fault of the eq, and any DAW will crap out in the extreme, so not the fault of the DAW either.. Still stand by an incredible gem in the eq arsenal. Use it more for pre processing than on the output end, but doesn't get much better than this IMHO. Free offering for the taking. Resurrecting the dark force "R" word. ReaEQ is in there with the installation suite and should be in the tool kit of every digital musician. Get it here: http://www.reaper.fm/reaplugs/ Cannot argue about the price, regardless of what is politically correct about "R". John

Agreed. Quad Curve EQ is extremely clean and versatile. And it does have a spectrum analyzer. It does not have M/S processing. That much is true.

Maybe the artifact is the echo inside my empty skull :) I will go through all my settings again and confirm I don't have another effect later/before that is interfering. But I will try to document what I consider an artifact, and maybe I'm misunderstanding something. Thanks for all helpful suggestions, links and comments. Allan

Text doesn't translate well to the spoken word. "Just severed" doesn't mean it happened yesterday (it's been over 2 years). It means they "merely" severed their relationship with Pace and "just" substituted another, equally fragile system of their own design. Good that you haven't had problems with Waves licensing. Trust me, many others have, including yours truly. I don't do Waves anymore as a result.

glad you don't have a problem with their licensing. I guess i've not used their proprietary licensing since I thought it was Pace i used on my USB stick, but regardless...they lost a customer just from that experience, so I was never interested in jumping through their hoops to get Pace or any other licensing working again.

@yorolpal: (Sorry to go off off topic but this may help yorolpal) Concerning ILok. I had that problem and this fixed it (see below). There may be something else running at startup like windows update or graphics driver update. This causes the ILok license manager to not start properly. Go to Administrative Tools/Services/ and find "Pace License Services". Double click or right click and select Properties then change "Startup Type" from "Automatic" to "Automatic (Delayed Startup)".
