EQing help for each instrument in 8.5.3

I'm looking for a little help with EQing each track within my hiphop mixes. I heard it's not good to solo each track while EQing, is this correct? I heard you can, but it's not recommended. Due to the fact that the instrument(s) you EQ (I.E. Snare, kick drum, bass & etc.) can sound different from solo EQing to EQing with the whole track playing. I am asking what is the best range for each instrument Hz wise? I have looked, and see different answers. But where is a good source website to get a good EQ range for all instruments advice so I can use my ears to hear the sound I want? I just want a little guidance so I can have a decent starting point. I use sonar's fx bin and I use Mercury Waves for plugins. A good range for snare, claps, kick drum, hi hats, piano, bass guitar, sub woofer bass & etc. So I can get a better dynamic sound in my mixdowns before mastering. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. U can go to my myspace page www.myspace.com/mistamacctrax to hear a few trax I have done with an artist. Explicit hiphop lyrics if that does not bother you. It's all mixdown with no master until we are ready to release all original tracks. All advice and criticism is welcome. I'm still learning, and need a little help from time to time. Thanks....

The trouble with EQ'ing tracks in solo is that you will naturally want to tweak each one until it sounds "perfect" in isolation.

Then, when you listen to them all together all you've got is sonic mush where the same frequencies are either cut or boosted across multiple tracks and each one is masked behind another.

There really is no "best range" - each track should be EQ'd by reference to what else is going on in your song.

You need to read up on the subject of Complementary EQ'ing techniques.

As an example, I think it's perfectly ok to mix your drums as one instrument, but again, it's important to mix these in the context of the whole song, and again you run the risk of having your kick drum & bass stepping on each other so one or both of these will need to have a different EQ curve applied to separate them in the mix.

You heard correct. You need to eq each track according to the mix at hand. The same instrument will be Eq'ed differently in 2 different songs in order to fit the song. So why would you want to hear ir alone wjhen its not going to be alone.

You need to Eq in context with the song at hand. You can have the same instruemt in 20 songs and you will need different EQ for each and every song.
