EZDrummer 2 Individual Track Routing to Channels
Hi; I use Sonar X3 and have EZ Drummer 2. I've been wanting for a long time to run the individual instruments out of EZD and into their own tracks in Sonar but cannot find how to do this. All I know is that you have to get into the mixer in EZD and pull down the drop down from each instrument and assign them to a new channel number but I cannot find out where to go from there. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! John B.

Those are NOT midi channels\numbers they are output #'s. I use the CAL splitnotestotracks to separate the drums to individual tracks. I also save drumsets after changing outputs to a preset with Indv outs at the end of the preset name. Like Nashvilkee_indvOuts There may be a better way but I have been doing like this forever, as in decades. It works for mew and is very quick

Are you recording midi notes or audio? I ask because my answer was for midi notes specifically.

I tried what reginald suggested and it did work, but there appeared to be no way to record it to the tracks. There was a Mute button, a Solo button and an Audio button (no Record). When I pushed the Audio and Solo buttons they laid down a stereo audio track, but even though I saved it, the audio track disappeared when I re opened the project. I was hoping to do this as MIDI data on the tracks as Stratman does, but the audio way is OK. I just would like to be able to record (save) the audio. Thanks John B

If you bounce the tracks it will generate the audio files.

In the EZD Mixer you've selected an output channel for the kick, and in Sonar you have an audio track with its input set to the EZD output channel for the kick. Arm the audio track for recording and press R.

You can't RECORD in EZD (as far as i recall, as it's been a few years). Send the EZD channels out to Sonar/ CbB, and record in the DAW as opposed to in the synth.

John, are you trying to play and record the MIDI, or are you using the MIDI loops in EZD? If using the loops, just bounce the MIDI track. If you want to record your own playing, you will record to the MIDI track then bounce.

I'm using the loops. I'm sorry I didn't clarify that. So are you saying that I should put my loops together in EZD and move them to a MIDI track and then bounce? Speaking of bouncing, the only bouncing I ever did in Sonar was the "Bounce to clip" function to consolidate MIDI and/audio tracks. Is this what I'd use to transfer the individual instruments to their own channel? Thanks guys! John B.

I like to setup EZ drummer for 5 outputs.. Kick, Snare, Hat, Toms, Overheads. As was suggested before.. in Sonar.. you add an audio channel, then assign the input to be the EZ drummer output you want. I setup the kick audio channel to be mono, snare stereo, hat stereo, toms mono and overheads stereo. It works great.

After you get your EZD outputs set up in Sonar, freeze the synth, that will generate audio on each of those output trks.

So, why is NOTHING working for me here?! I've taken every suggestion and no success. I even did a little experiment. I started an EZD and brought in a pattern. Then I went to EZD mixer and pulled down the drop down for each channel and assigned them out to different channels (ex. Kick drum to 1, Snare drum to 2, etc). Then in Sonar I inserted an audio track for each instrument. When I go to the audio channels input and select the corrusponding output for the channel in EZD (ex audio input 1 to EZD output 1 (for Kick drum) all of a sudden, the RECORD BUTTON for that Sonar audio channel disappears, as does the Echo button, which is replaced by a button that resembles a wave form. When I push the waveform button and run push play, a waveform (in yellow) shows up on the track, but I can't do anything with it because if I push the waveform button again, the waveform goes away! If I try to save it, it doesn't come back when I re open it. Just for a test, if I go into the same audio input and select my Focusrite interface, the RECORD button shows up again. Why is this so difficult? Is it just me? Am I an idiot? You all have the SAME setup as me (Sonar and EZD 2). Why am I not getting the same results as you? I would appreciate somebody give me a step-by-step, if possible. I'm about to bang my head against the wall and since I'm on blood thinner, that wouldn't be a good thing. Thanks! John B

You have a project in Sonar X3. You add the EZD2 synth, either as a simple instrument track or with all the outputs. You route the outputs as already discussed. This.... http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=Cakewalk&language=3&help=SoftSynths.04.html Now, while in the EZD2 synth you drag and drop the midi song blocks to the midi track in Sonar, enable looping and expand them, move them around and so on. In any case, you have some number of measures of midi that play in Sonar. This video is about recording Addictive Drums in Sonar, but the steps are basically the same for EZD2.... https://youtu.be/iNBbktuoLw0 Does this help you? p.s. You must have been adding a post just as I was typing this, so forgive the redundant info.

I did everything, EVERYTHING!!!! THE GUY IN THE VIDEO SAID. I FOLLOWED STEP BY STEP! CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME WHY THE RECORD BUTTON DISAPPEARS WHEN I CHANGE THE INPUT OF THE AUDIO CHANNEL!!!!????? PLEASE TELL ME WHY THIS HAPPENS!! I CANNOT ARM THE AUDIO TRACKS BECAUSE THE RECORD BUTTON GOES AWAY WHEN I ATTEMPT TO CHANGE THE INPUT OF THE AUDIO CHANNEL. I'm beginning to think that I't impossible for me to do this because I have aversion of Sonar lower than Platinum!!!

When you drag EZD from the synth rack into anywhere on the track pain, don't you get prompted how you want the MIDI track/folder set up? There should be an checkbox option to create multiple audio tracks for each output. -d

No. I don't get that. No questions or prompts. It just moves quietly onto the track. I can change the audio input if I'm setting up my Focusrite interface to record audio from my microphone, but that appears to be all I'm allowed with an input change, at least if I want to record something.

I took notice on the video when he changes the audio input, there is a box called "MME Devices" and he has it checked. Could that be the problem? Mine does not show that "MME Devices" choice.

Okay, don't drag into an existing track. Drag the EZD synth into a blank area on the track view timeline. You should then get the dialog. I just tried it in a blank project using CWBL

Don't give up. I suspect this is just some midi configuration issue. I'm not very versed in that, but certain options will prevent the output of a synth from being recorded. I just had trouble myself, because I used to have a controller connected to this laptop. Add EZD2 to a blank project as davehorch did, but check Midi Source and First Synth Audio Output. Sonar will create two tracks. One will have just the midi plug symbol, the other has the midi plug symbol over a keyboard. On the track with just the midi plug symbol, check that the input is set to All Inputs - Midi Omni. On the other track check that the input is set to EZ1 Stereo (the first stereo output of EZD2). Drag a song block from EZD2 and drop it on the track with just the midi plug. Close EZD2. Press play. You should see the meters respond on both tracks and hear the playback. Add an Audio Track. Set it's input to be EZ1 Stereo (the first stereo output of EZD2) Press play. You should see the meters on all three tracks respond and hear playback. If you also select the Waveform Preview button on the Audio Track you'll see the waveform, but of course it's temporary. Arm the Audio Track. Press R. Audio should be recording on the Audio Track. Let us know.

I'm not at my computer now to check this. But I believe that synth recording was added in Platinum and is not available in X3.
The different modes of Midi was definitely added in Platinum.

X3 Studio in this case. Hopefully someone will weigh in on version capabilities. Perhaps CbB is an option....

Thanks. I tried all of the suggestions by olemon above. They don't come in as split audio/midi, just audio (without the audio button). I believe it's what Base57 says and that's a pretty s**tty way for the original Sonar designers to set this up. You can do this in REAPER for free but you can't do it unless you fork over $500.00 for the top of the line Sonar product! I realize it's not that way now with the Bandlab setup and I could DL and install CbyB absolutely free, but I hesitate to do that because my Toontrack accounts will only work on 1 DAW and I would have to transfer my licenses over, which I'm not prepared to do right now. When a time comes when I have to, I will then, but I just don't have the time or patience now to relearn anything. I have spent days on this and trying all of the suggestions here to no avail. I'm giving up. I have a dedicated music computer which I have wasted time and resources on to do something that is not possible with my current setup. I'm not wasting anymore time and effort. I'll just continue to use Sonar X3 and EZD2 as I have been (single channel). I'm finding more and more that it's a good thing that Bandlab bought Cakewalk, because of issues like this (and the ones many here have been struggling with like the lifetime upgrades that never happened), the original owners/management of Cakewalk were not the most fairest people to do business with. I do sincerely appreciate all of your suggestions and trying to help me with this issue. John B.

I also have Studio One 3 and I don't think there were any issues with it and EZD2 authorizations. Good luck with whatever you opt to do.

@OP What do you mean Toontrack stuff only works in one DAW? I have Reaper, Sonar X1,X2 and X3 and Splat and CWBandlab installed. It works in all of them. I had Studio One 3 Pro unhindered demo installed and EZ drummer 2 worked fine in it. So did Ez Keys. They do not care how many daws you have on one computer, only how many Computers you install it on. You are creating headaches for yourself when you have a great program for free staring you in the face. The authorization for Toontrack comes from the computer, not the application. Download Bandlab CW and get on with it. Simple! It's miles ahead of X3 and is FREE. Also, if you are that worried contact Toontracks and ask them.

That's what I was planning to do.

You really need to understand how all this works. I mean to make your life less stressful. It's all about the computer ID that Toontrack assigned to the computer, NOT to any software app. Not to a program. You paid to use Toontrack, on 2 computers as long as you do NOT run them at the same time. Perhaps that is where your confusion is coming from. That's 2 computers, not 2 software programs

It's been almost 3 years since I installed them but I kind of remember being asked by the configuration part of the program which DAW I would be using it in.
