EZDrummer Cymbal Choke
I just installed the Nashville kit for EZDrummer. When I use the mouse to click the crash cymbal, I get nice sustain. When I enter a whole note (4 beats) on the staff for the cymbal (Bb below middle C) and play the MIDI track, the cymbal is choked on the second beat. All that is playing on the track: kick, snare, and hi-hat. Is there some reason the hi-hat is chocking the cymbal? Am I missing something? I am certainly not new to drum machines or virtual drums, but I am new to EZDrummer. Related question: Why doesn't EZDrummer use the same drum map as everyone else? Quite confusing when moving MIDI tracks from Session Drummer 3 to EZDrummer.

I have Nashville EZX but haven't messed with it much yet. I normally use the NY lost studios set. But I've noticed that some of the crashes are choked and others are not. Have you tried different crashes? It might not be the hi hat choking it. Actually...you could try deleting the HH note and see if it still chokes. If it does...then it's not the HH doing it. Just a thought.

To your second question, have you downloaded the drum maps from toontrack? There are user created drum maps for several EZD kits in the extra downloads area that might be some help.

It almost sounds like the cymbal is behaving like an open hi-hat.

It does seem like the Nashville kit had a crash (on the right side) that chokes. I'll check mine tomorrow and let you know if someone hasn't answered by then.

There is a choked cymbal in the Nashville kit. Go to the mapping page and play the midi track to watch the notes being triggered. I don't remember which note off the top of my head. I used to use Battery with my own custom sample libraries. When I started using that I made sure to load my drum pieces to the GM standard so if I ever wanted just to pull something in that was GM and play it at least my kit would already be loaded. It was hard when I got Superior. I was in the middle of an album project for a client and the GM map didn't work for some of my tracks and it was easier just to edit the notes in Sonar. I find that most pieces in the kits do fit the GM standard but there are a few that are scattered. Anyway, check for that choked cymbal. It turned up in one of my tracks a few days ago.

Thanks, guys. I'm sure it will work out and will let you know. By the way, downloading the vintage set right now.

OK, guys, here is the drum map for EZDrummer. http://www.vettaville.com/ezdrummer_midi_keyboard_layout.htm 1-It has all the GM MIDI notes but adds others. 2-The cymbal I was trying to use is on the map as muted/choked, so that explains it. I now have Std, Nashville, and Vintage kits and, with the Session Drummer 3 kits I have bought and the various odd and ends (like Fab Four, outboard synths, etc.) I think I am good for drums since I usually tend towards organic sounds. I actually like the Vintage kit best—but the Nashville kit has more. Both are good for any kind of pop, country, etc. despite their names. One weird thing: the Toontrack ad for Vintage drums says "Sound like Ringo" but I don't see any Beatles grooves in the MIDI files. Not a problem: I don't need them and could create them if required, but that is odd. You'd think they throw in Ticket to Ride, She Loves You, or some other classic just for fun. Maybe there are in there under sneaky names and I just didn't find them. The mix for this song I wrote is a LONG WAY from being finished, but in the chorus you can hear the Ringo inspiration. Say what you will about my old pal Ringo (and risk my wrath), but you must admit he is super-creative. http://soundcloud.com/bill-hartmann/15-minutes-of-fame To be clear, this is Session Drummer 3 but I may change out the sounds before it is a record.

Of note, if you're investing in Toontrack products, I recommend also looking at EZPlayer Pro. It allows you the remapping ability of all your MIDI files to any player...BFD, Reason Drum Kits, GM, etc. very quickly.

I was experiencing a weird thing with the Zildjian Gen 16 Z-Pack and BFD (actually this might be more a BFD issue). I had a few different cymbals set up but it seemed that when the MIDI track triggered one while the first was still ringing out the first one stopped dead. It sounds very unnatural. It wasn't set to choke or anything. I couldn't figure out what to do so I left it and fortunately it was as noticeable with the rest of the tracks playing but I'd like to figure it out. It could just be that the actual sound of the second cymbal is washing out the sound of the first but it sounds very... IDK, rigid? Dead stoppy? Hard to explain I guess.

Hi,Konradh! If you can, pick up Toontrack's Latin Percussion. It is a must if you use any percussion instruments since the other kits don't have any at all. I run one Superior for the kit. Then I open another instance of Superior for the Latin Percussion library. I have the real instruments so when I can I play the real thing but it is nice if your working away from home to pull up Desi Arnaz On command! LOL!
