Early Release 2016:08 is happening!

I'm about to go grab it!

Wow! For me this sounds like a very important update...

Top of the list of fixes are for the ui and lanes/comping!

I can't wait to try it!

Wait 'til you see what you can do with the plug-in browser. It addresses a lot of the wish list items people had for the plug-in manager, but without having to use the plug-in manager. Pretty slick.

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!

Sounds good Craig...

I'll look at those changes ASAP as well... I wasn't in need of anything there, but that doesn't mean I won't enjoy the new elements anyway! ;-)

Lane zoom minimum is exactly as I pictured... Zoom max is better, but still not a simple select-this-area-of-one-lane. It still makes the screen share multiple lanes...

I don't know why they seem reluctant to alliw a lane to be (max) zoomed as can a track... <sigh>...

But I'm grateful for the improvement and looking forward to exploring the other changes...

It is possible. There have been some major updates and tweaks to the FX bin streaming code in the engine in prep for another upcoming feature.

Not reluctant - its just not as simple as it seems. Its on the todo list and you may see it soon.

Thanks Noel!

Difficult I understand...

That's great news... I'm already enjoying the 08 update, so it is already a good step and helpful... I will sit tight and know it's coming ASAP....

Thanks for the anxiety meds!

Sounds like this could be in preparation for the "Plug-in Load Balancing" feature as mentioned on the "In-The-Oven" section on the Cakewalk website.....

This is absolutely amazing news and what a difference this new approach is making

I do have a question for the CAKEWALK STAFF though, that I would really be interested in knowing the answer to - either via a response in the forum for via a PM....

Have the project team for SONAR moved to an "agile" project management framework with "Kanban", "sprints", "scrums" etc.

I have recently been studying "agile project management" and would love to know whether this new "lease of life" is based around "agile"?

I would say although we don't blindly follow agile we use the best parts of the agile methodology. We have been doing this for several years now although with monthly releases its gotten more focused.
We have daily scrum meetings and we have user stories, and sprints. For us every month is a sprint and the stories are the theme's for each month's release cycle. Each monthly release goes through an entire development cycle on a micro level. i.e design -> development -> localization -> QA -> beta -> release management
Of course we have some bigger features in design and development, much longer but there is a full release cycle each month.

I think it is worthwhile highlighting that "release management" apparently includes the discipline of getting end user feedback (both in "early release" phase after the formal beta and in the full release phase). With monthly development, the user feedback is prompt, regular, and specific. That facilitates rapid correction of unexpected problems and timely celebration of successes. Very healthy for the developers, the users, and the overall product. High fives all around for implementing this process. Other companies could learn a lot from you.

This is a nice update. I see there's not been much comment yet on the comping improvements, but so far, it seems to be much nicer. I also like the new minimum display size for clip fades.

When Cakewalk was developing the monthly update concept, a lot of people on the forum thought this would put undue stress on the developers; CW answered that it actually made development easier, and it seems to be the case precisely for the reasons you mention.

It is really great seeing what I have been studying being used on something I love - and being able to reap the benefits

Seriously good job to the team at Sonar/Cakewalk for the work so far - the speed and quality of the updates has been phenomenal and I predict MAJOR successes for SONAR in the future - this "fine tuning" of the product and the OSX announcement really has the potential for SONAR to grab a HUGE share of the market

Very healthy for the developers, the users, and the overall product. High fives all around for implementing this process. Other companies could learn a lot from you.

Thanks. I can't say that its easy to do but having smaller releases, coupled with the early access program and rollback capability, definitely takes some of the stress and risk out of release cycles. If something is wrong we typically hear about it much sooner and can address it very quickly.

More importantly, end users are far more engaged with our software than ever before since they can virtually see it being built before their own eyes. In the past most users didn't even notice half the features we'd put in, since the releases were too big and contained too many new things to learn. This is definitely the way of the future for software development.

I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea here because I have really liked all the updates except one last year that seemed to be less stable. This one however seems to be a significant cut above other updates. My CPU use is ridiculously low. I'm not sure why either. But that finding is consistent over many projects. So as far as I am concerned counting all the added features that appeared in all the past updates this is like the optimized version. Plus I do like the new plugin browser.

I will be praising CW for the rest of my life due to lifetime updates and delighted each month. Who ever thought this would ever happen.

Best

its funny, I find about 2 updates ago my performance meter in sonar almost doubled.
however, I haven't noticed any significant deference in performance. still running strong.
but my PM went from reading 13% on almost all heavy projects to now 23% on all heavy projects.

so it very well be just my system, or something not being accurate between TM and the PM in SP .
but still AG here GP of the CWF. ;-)
