Earthquake !!!

On the east coast. Reports the center was between Charlottesville & DC.... reporting 5.8 to 6.... I felt it pretty obviously here in NC.

A rare event for us.

just spoke to my mom in Staunton... town very close to Charlottesville..... they felt it pretty good. No obvious damage that she can see. She thought it was her neighbor dropping something in his garage..... ummmmmmm....OK....!

Was anyone watching Bapu?  He's been pretty frisky with those stylish argyle socks, so someone should have keeping an eye on him.

Until we restore some disorder here, you folks on the East Coast should hang on to something.

I guess that's what I felt - I was busy typing and I thought I had accidentally pushed the table my arm was resting on. Twice. Now that I think about it, and since they evacuated buildings here in NYC, I guess we felt it. :s

    Bapu (and Ubiquitous Bubba):
Most of the time I get where you guys are coming from but sarcasm not needed at this time.

I was working at my music setup when I felt the piano bench I sit on move with a sine wave pattern. We live on a corner property and we're also the first multi-story house for a couple of blocks so we catch the wind real bad some times. I thought at first it was a microburst and then my wife comes down the steps and says to get out that it's an earthquake. I live in Trenton, NJ. Scary to say the least.

Reports are saying it was felt way far west - like out in the midwest. I was out in California just coming out of the gates at Vanderberg AFB in 1989 when the quake hit out there during the baseball World Series and this was similar to say the least. Not an experience I'd ever want to repeat.

So far we're safe right here but listening to the scanner for local police and fire departments I'm hearing reports of broken natural gas mains. The sirens have quieted down for now but the prospect of aftershocks scares the crap out of me.

You just don't get it do you? There are times your sarcasm is warranted, and this is NOT one of them. Some of us take this seriously. For some of us that have been through these things, we don't need or want to repeat the experience.

The first few earthquakes usually do scare people.  I grew up in central NJ--Middlesex and Monmouth counties, but I'm in southern California now.  My mom felt it up there, but there doesn't seem to be any damage.

The first few earthquakes I felt out here were a strange.  The first thought was I drank too much caffeine.  Then you learn to look at the lamps and hanging stuff to see if they're moving.  Then you know it's a quake.

I don't think it's sarcasm as much as familiarity.  Bapu lives out here--I'm sure he's been through more than a few quakes.  I imagine he was much closer to the Northridge quake than I was.  I don't think he was making light of your situation.  I think it's just a defensne mechanism that we've developed to live with the constant possibility of a quake.

I hope you, your family and friends are all safe.  Best wishes.

We're safe for now, and I also understand coping mechanisms, but this doesn't sound like one of them. There are times Bapu doesn't know when to take things serious. And a 5.9 in a place that normally doesn't get quakes (even though I know we have fault lines all up and down the East Coast) really puts a fine point on things.

You're right of course, 5.9 is not something to be frivilous about.  But when you've been through a 7+, it does change one's perspective.

I'm actually kind of surprised that you're seeing/hearing about as much damage as you are--that far from the epicenter.

I'm glad you're safe.  I'm sure it was a very shocking and unsettling experience due to the fact that the East Coast does not have tremors as frequently as out West.  I don't believe that anyone here intended any disrespect towards you or anyone else within the quake zone.  I don't think anyone here used sarcasm to mock those people or their situation.  It's been my experience that the folks here normally do know when to take things seriously and they are a very compassionate group of people.  Sometimes, we do kid each other and joke around in the face of serious events, but it is not intended to imply a disregard of the people in those circumstances.

Sometimes, when someone wants to have a serious discussion in the Coffee House, they'll start a new thread for that purpose and state in their original post that this is a serious discussion.  I've found that people normally respect that and post accordingly.

Anyway, I'm glad you're safe and I hope you continue to remain so in the future.  I'm sorry if you felt you were being denigrated in anyway by a callous disregard of your circumstances.  That was certainly not my intent.

I'm begining to suspect that the Forum servers or Internet backbone are being affected.  It seems that it takes 5 minutes to refresh the screen after submitting a post.  I noticed it just after the first posts about the quake.

I didn't know one had to state explicitly that a thread was serious to be taken as such (and I've been around this forum since day one and even before that). There shouldn't have to be duplicate threads on the same subject. I saw Herb's post and he's not normally one to start frivolous threads and automatically thought it was a serious thread. It's just that some people seem to not know when a joke is not to be made of something.

At least the fire departments and PSEG (the gas & electric people) are getting a handle on the broken gas mains from what I'm hearing on the scanner.

That depends on where the server chain runs through and how it's re-routing itself. I know cell phone service has gone flaky here for the last few hours. Thankfully the ham radio repeaters around here have their own power so that's one way of getting help if needed.

The quake was very noticeable here in Hamilton and things have been rumbling off and on since. Believe me, I have cause to be frightened as my apartment is on the 20th floor of a high rise and shaky floors are unsettling when you're 200 ft in the air.

But I have to say I'm with Bapu. The thought of a spider crawling into my mouth while sleeping is truly terrifying. I can't stop earthquakes, but those spiders know to stay clear.

Keep yer knickers on Jackie-Boo. It was a 5.8 Earthquake, a bit frightening, and unsettling but you don't need to start panicking and making it a bigger deal than it has to be. I've been through a lot worse earthquakes & tsunami's where 1000's of lives were lost and we didn't have time to do much but save ourselves.....let alone make a comment in the coffee house.
So, take a deep breath, keep yourself calm, and rationally deal with the situation.

It wasn't too bad here... a little bit of rolling.... we have a rock quarry up the road a mile and they blast a few times a week... that's is different from this motion. The blasting is a vibration like a truck going by... the tremor was motion...

I usually assume that it's serious unless it's from Bapu.  LOL  It tends to minimize this sort thing--but it doesn't eliminate misunderstandings completely.  Also why I use the LOL's and smilies very liberally.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot--hey, who the hell are you guys?

I was working at UF and we started getting calls from colleagues in D.C. Philly and N.Y.C. moments after it happened. I've been following the news all afternoon on my mobile... I ended up learning alot about the history of the old fault lines on the east coast and the known history of earthquakes in the area.

I already new it happened in Manhattan. I had never heard about Virginia but quickly learned they had a moderate event on Jul 16th and a noteworthy event in 2003.

I read that people in New York City were reading tweets about the quake in D.C. seconds before it was felt in N.Y.C.

It seems like the damage was minimal considering how many people live in close proximity.

That seems like a good thing.

    best regards,
    mike

I'll share my experience for what it's worth...

So I'm sitting here typing an email to a client. My monitor on my computer desk is moving, so I think it's my hand on my mouse. You know...sometimes you rest your hand a certain way and it makes you shake, right? Well I take my hand off my mouse and see my monitor is still shaking....how weird?!

Well, the shaking gets worse and all of a sudden, I feel/hear like a huge gust of wind smash into my house like the microburst Jack mentioned, but then the entire house started shaking! I see my guitars swaying back and forth on the racks, my ceiling shaking.."my God...we must be having a tornado" I thought. I run to steady my guitars and it hits me...this ain't no tornado, it's a fookin earffquake!!!!!!!!!!!

What the heck is happening to this earth?! We never get earthquakes over here. Ok, we've had a few little guys...but sheesh, a 5.8 in Virginia that sent tremors up the entire coast and inwards all the way into Chicago?! I'm still sitting here in awe....I can't fathom what a full blown quake must be like and I don't wanna know. I'm not even sure what the tremor was that we felt, but it was scary and lasted for about 20 seconds...maybe more. I felt a few tremors in Bulgaria after the big quake in Turkey in 99 or 2000...whever that was, I can't quite remember when I was there. I felt a few little things in Cali when I was there...but this was definitely more intense. One heck of a tremor I'd say.

My cabinets opened up, some stuff fell off the shelves and my phone was dead for about 30 minutes but other than that, we're ok over here. I hope all of you are ok as well. Anyone from Virginia or close to Virginia have anything to report? Whew that was scary!

My dad was asleep and woke up yelling at me to stop punching the walls. LMAO! I get blamed for everything I tell ya! When he saw the cabinets all open and stuff scattered on the floor, he knew it wasn't me that did it. LOL! I still can't believe what I felt today...just wow!

It's good to know you guys are OK.

I found this news on the BBC.

"At the National Cathedral in north-west Washington, the highest building in the US capital city, three pinnacles in the central tower snapped off and a fourth was leaning. The 30-storey high central tower suffered structural damage.
"It's not massive damage but it's very serious," Sam Lloyd, dean of the National Cathedral, told Associated Press.
Workers evacuated from their offices gathered in the Washington streets
Also, the embassy of Ecuador was reported to have suffered major damage."
