Easy way to select and silence certain parts of audio inside an audio clip?

Hi guys...

How can I select and silence certain bits of audio in a clip?  Is that basically a matter of cutting the clip in two places; deleting the snippet, and bouncing to clip...  Or is there a better way?

Cheers/thanks

You can also use a Volume Envelope.

Set 2 nodes at your 'silence' points and drop to zero.

This way it can be non-destructive.
Plus, you can also do a quick or slower drop. Also, other use for panning a section.

I have always preferred simpleman's idea; I don't like to paint myself into a corner, and he is right about the subtle way you can manipulate the audio with that method. I used Adobe Audition (previously Syntrilium's Cool Edit Pro) for a long time and became quite adept with envelopes.

I was a BIG fan of the the "process" "silence" feature in Cubase

All you had to do was select the part of the clip you wanted and select "Process" and then "Silence" from
    the menu....

Not that easy in Sonar...but not far off...

Yeah the Mute is a snap but I also use a single cut and slip edit a lot too.

My method will depend on the situation.

If I just want to temporarily silence a clip or section, I'll isolate it & mute it 'K'
If I want it permanently silenced, but non-destructively, I'll use a volume or clip envelope
If I want it silenced & removed, I'll isolate it & delete it, but the split needs to be at zero crossing points to avoid audio 'pops'

Or you can apply a very short fade to the split points if you want to maintain clip length for looping. If you split at a zero-crossing point then it may become a little more cumbersome if you want the option of looping the audio. As you say, depends on the situation. Doesn't sound like it would be relevant in this case.

Yep - definitely something else to consider.

Basically we have the tools to deal with practically any situation a fertile (or infertile ) imagination can conjure up

Using the Smart tool, hold "alt" and left click each end of the portion to be muted. Then right click it and select "Clip Mute/Unmute".
