Echo Layla 3G input questions

I have an Echo Layla 3G and am using Sonar 8.5.3 producer. I am hoping someone can help me with input problems.

I plug my guitar into a direct box, output from the direct box into Input #3 on the back of the Layla.

I open Sonar and in the audio track I select "Left ASIO Echo PCI Layla3G analog 3" for Input.

I open the Layla 3G console and select "Analog in 3" and move the fader up and down. No matter what the fader is set to I get a signal in Sonar. I can mute & drop every every single input in the console to -40 and still I get the same exact level in Sonar. I have no control at all over the input level of my instrument.

This doesn't seem right, can anyone tell me what is going on with it and how I can fix it?

First the obvious: Have you muted the direct output on the console?
By default, the direct output is unmuted so it will not be effected by Sonar.
You want the channel's output muted and just the 'playback' channel on and at 100%.

If your settings are right, you will also see the proper channel displayed under the master output sliders.
In my case I see "Analog Out 1/2" under the master out.
