Editing a Step Sequencer Pattern

Since getting the new SONAR Platinum, I've been re-doing some of my older work. Coming from X1, I have found that a lot of the commands and processes are a bit different.

My first problem was figuring out how to apply the correct drum map to AD2, but found the solution on the Cakewalk Blog. However, I now have a perplexing issue, for which I can not find a solution.

I created a two bar step sequencer clip, beginning at measure 2 of my song. So far so good. I set the default view (using the little selector in the upper right hand corner of the clip). But I can not edit the clip. Highlighting and right clicking, double-clicking, or using the View menu, brings up a blank one bar clip.

How do I edit the existing clip?

The view always opens empty. After the view is opened, double-click again or use the editor menu on the clip to populate the view. Or don't close the view, leave it open. Then clips will always populate with the first double-click. It has been this way at least since X2.

I myself have had issues with using drum maps within the Step Sequencer, so I just quit using them, and immediately for me, things started working much more as expected.  I was having the same sorts of issues you are reporting, by the way.

What I did to help myself work with drum maps was to create a Word document with a simple table showing the same info that I would have had displayed with a drum map, and that only took maybe 10 minutes to create and print.  I even laminated it, thinking it would be something I would frequently use.

But what I found in practice is that through simple repetition of use, along with the preview ability in Step Sequencer (click in the note name and that cell will trigger, to verify I am on the correct drum note), I just ended up memorizing which note numbers went to which drum kit pieces, and so it is no longer any hindrance to me not to have a drum map.

In addition, apparently drum maps DO work well in the Piano Roll View (PRV), and that might be another option for you.

Just my thoughts on the matter - hope any of the above helps, and good luck with it all :)

Based on what I've read in Sonar help is you can edit a step sequencer pattern only in the step sequencer view. If the step sequencer pattern clip was made from another clip and they are linked (which is the default setting) then any edits you make would update the original clip and vise verse. If the clip is not linked, or, the clip was made from a blank then you may edit it in the step sequencer view only.
