Editing in X3’s Piano Roll

As a very recent convert from Producer 8.5 to X3 several questions have come up about editing in the Piano Roll View (PRV).

1) I sometimes go from Showing the Controller Pane to Hiding it, and in 8.5 there was a simple shortcut key ( C ) that would achieve this. Are there any shortcuts for this function in X3, as I can’t see one?

2) I usually work in PRV with the Controller Pane hidden. The main reason I might choose at times to show it is if I want to lasso-select a group of notes without selecting notes above and below them in the same area. In other words, I want to get the velocity tails momentarily off the main screen because lasso-select grabs the velocity tails of notes I don’t want to select, and selects them. Does anyone know a way around this and still keep the velocity tails showing? I mean how do you discriminately lasso-select notes in the PRV without capturing unwanted nearby ones by ‘grabbing their tails”?

3) I used to use the MIDI effects – like Velocity and Quantize – in the PRV, but in X3 I can’t seem to access them. The only way I seem to be able to access the MIDI effects is to right click a clip in Track view. The old way of selecting  a group of notes in the PRV and going Process > MIDI Fx > Cakewalk FX > Velocity no longer seems to exist. I know there are workarounds, but am I right in thinking that now the only way you can bring up MIDI effects is by right clicking a clip in Track View and going Process, etc., and that access from the PRV is now denied?

1) It's Shift+C.
2) See the X3 Reference Guide P.739.
3) After lasso-selecting note events in the PRV, hold down Ctrl and right-click the blank space in the PRV, then go to MIDI Plugins > ...

Thank you Tak T. Much appreciate you covering all 3 questions. I was surprised to see positive answers in each case.

Tried Shift + C and it works. And to get to MIDI plugins your method also works.

With great trepidation I tried the Registry modifying protocol as described on page 739 of reference guide (I didn't even know there was an X3 reference guide!), but unfortunately without result. I even rebooted to see if it would then work but it didn't. I'm still getting unwanted notes in the lasso.

Following the instructions on pg 739, the final edit window that came up in the registry after I typed the new value looked as follows (I wanted to paste a screenshot but the last time I tried that it took me hours to work out how. In fact I made and edited the screenshot, I just don't know how to get it on here with much ease for what time I have)

Edit DWORD (32 bit) Value

Value Name
AllowLassoVellnNotesPane

Value Data
0

To the right it has:
Base
Hexadecimal
Decimal
With “Hexadecimal” as the default checked box.

Am I doing something wrong here? The instructions say to change the value to zero, but the value was already zero. 32 bit when I'm using 64 bit? I'm wondering if, seeing as this didn't work, I should delete this new entry from my Registry in case it causes problems?

Hi, I'm wondering if you typed the value name wrong, because I don't see the issue in both X2 and X3 here. It's "Allow Lasso Vel ln Notes Pane" without the spaces (i.e. not double Ls like "Vell n").

As for posting a screenshot, I do this:

1. Access imgur.com
2. Drag the screenshot file into the site
3. Click "Start Upload"
4. Click the document icon located under BBCode (message boards & forums) (This will copy the link)
5. Paste the link into the post

Hope that helps

Tak T.

You saved my skin again Tak T.

When I first read your reply suggesting I might have typed the name wrongly I thought, “I have never checked the spelling of a group of words more meticulously in my life! – it couldn’t be that...” Then when you spelled it out (Vel In) and specified that it was not two Ls, I saw my mistake. The font used in the reference manual has a lower case L shaped exactly the same as an upper case i. I corrected the name in the registry and it worked.

I am very grateful for your insight, and very happy to be able to discriminately lasso select in the piano roll even with velocity tails showing on main screen.

I will try your screenshot method if the need comes up, thank you again.
