Editing midi tracks?

HI Folks
I’m quite new to computer music making using virtual instruments, softsynths, plugins’ etc so I expected a steep learning curve.   About 15+ years ago I had a midi setup,  Win3.1,  Cakewalk Pro V2.0 and a load of Synth modules and keyboards plus DAT tape and hard disk multitracker.   After a brake of some ten years, now I’ve retired, I’d like to get back into it.  Of course things have moved on since then and I now find that the learning curve is even steeper.   Editing midi tracks in V2.0 was a doddle  but  with Sonar HS 7 XL I’m totally lost.  I could really do with a little help regarding one or two issues.   This is the one I can’t get my head round.   Starting with blank sheet  load a midi file (a piano solo)  chose an instrument to play it  (lets say TTS-1)  To hear anything I take it I have to copy and paste the midi track to the instrument track?   Suppose I’d like to split the midi piano part into two tracks (left hand, bass part and right hand, treble part).   If I copy the piano part to a new track and now try to edit it I find that all the edits I’ve made appear on all the other tracks as well. What am I’m doing wrong? Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

if you created a simple instrument track, then yes, you'd have to copy the MIDI data to the instrument track.

if you had created separate MIDI/output tracks instead then you just have to set the OUTPUT, CHANNEL, BANK and PATCH on the MIDI track to the appropriate output parameters for TTS-1.

I would suggest that you work thru the tutorials in the help files.  there are hands on tutorials for working with MIDI and TTS-1 specifically in the help files.

    Hi Beagle
Thanks for the answer.  I think I’ve now worked out how to edit my midi files.  A bit convoluted but I’m happy with my work round.
    Cheers

In the Paste dialog box is a check box, 'Link To Original Clip'. Uncheck that.

If you're working with existing MIDI tracks, when you insert the softsynth, don't select Simple Instrument track. Instead just let it Add First Synth Output. Then you can just point the output of the MIDI tracks to the softsynth and not have to move the MIDI tracks. The Simple Instrument track is really for when you want to record a new MIDI track.
