Editing tools working right??

Longtime user. Can't figure out how to do the simplest things. For instance, I've just automated the volume on a vocal track and I want to make some small adjustments with my mouse. So far, I cant grab a node or line or anything. I've toggled through every tool. What am I doing wrong?

Also, if I split a clip in two, and nudge one of the clips, the other clip gets deleted. I can grab it with the move tool and move it and the other clip remains. Again, what am I doing wrong?

When I copy or paste I don't get an options screen.

I'm mainly an audio guy. I do quite a bit of editing. In 8.5, I only use the select tool. I can slice, move, slip edit, copy and paste, and nudge really quickly. It's not uncommon to construct a track from 4 or 5 tracks. It appears that in X1, the select tool only selects, and then you must hit a key to change tools to do further editing. Is that right? if that's the case, it adds a lot of keystrokes to my workflow.

I've had X1 for a month now and I'm still using 8.5 for work. I plan on spending the next few days coming to grips with the changes. So far, I'm underwhelmed.

In case it matters, 3.2 Quadcore AMD, 6gb ram, Win7 64bit, 4 UAD cards, Tascam 1884/FE-8, Alesis HD24. I have the X1a and X1b updates installed.

You can shift+click on the envelope to select it.

What this will do is change that track's edit filter. Look in the track headers for a drop down list showing the current state of the edit filter. By default this will say "clips". You can change this to various things, like automation, transients and so on.

You can select part of an envelope which will then have nodes added automatically, enabling you to drag the selected portion up/down.

Ok, that works. Thanks. Still another keystroke. Any idea on the nudge issue? It looks like I'll be recording and editing in 8.5 for the time being. Developed another lovely issue today. When I stop playback, I get a horrible noise. Sweet! If I pull the master fader down before I stop playback, it doesn't happen.

So this is how the developers intended the editing tools to work? How is this better? I've been thinking about making the switch to Protools but I'm so used to this platform. If I have to relearn the whole thing anyway, maybe now is the time.

It's probably not being deleted, just moved way offscreen; this is a bug. If you have Slide Over to Make Room enabled in Preferences > Customization > Editing (make sure you have the Advanced radio button enabled at the bottom), the clip will be moved way further than necessary just to make room, and every time you nudge the one half - even by just samples, and in either direction - the second half will jump further over by a measure or more. Changing to Blend Old and New will eliminate that.

The checkbox to enable Ask Every Time  for drag/drop and copy/paste is there, too.

If you haven't watched this video it will probably answer a number  of questions fo you on how to use some of the tools with automation.  Its from Scott Garrigus of Power Book fame.  The first part deals with how it was done in 8.5 and earlier and latter portion with X1.  Pay close attention to where the mouse cursor is and time line selection/non selection for the different functions.  Once you get the hang of it, it is far better(my opinion) than the 8.5 method.(although some may argue with this statement)

Thanks to everyone for the help. After ten years and thousands of hours on this program, It's hard to completely change the way I work. I'm not convinced it's better. It's different, that's for sure. I like the new channels. And the bitbridge has yet to quit on me so that's a plus. My muscle memory and bad eyesight get me a little frustrated.
