Electricity use

Does it take more electricity to record at higher sample rates?  Is there room in the market for a lower sample rate, "green" studio?

If you're sampling at twice the rate you're clearly using twice the electricity, but the results are only 20 - 40% better...

That's what my experience with 60hz vs 400hz power supplies tells me.

Because that's a harmonic of the resonant frequency of the wings, which makes them easier to flap and thus save energy...

yes, but if you flap them at 192kHz you get even more efficiency, so why stop at 400?

400Hz is used for high precision AC gear (SONAR suites in submarines run on them as well). Sorta sucks about the DC aspect of computers (but for the sake of the "3 millionth post" this is definitely debatable!)

Submarines ... that's where my experience with 400hz was.  Also Beryllium and "mass unbalance modulation", IIRC.

I am an EE and work on fighter aircraft.  400Hz is the only AC they use (they use several different voltages of DC).

We also deal with Beryllium in some of our aircraft equipment.

    No.

But during the summer it does take significantly more electricity for the air conditioning to cool things down from blowhards going on and on about their higher sample rates.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Fix uncertainty is a massive issue when "driving blind." The 400Hz systems are the most critical (same with aircraft). When you cannot see, the precision of the instruments becomes all that matters. Luckily GPS allows for fix resets, but once submerged the ESGNs are "it."

In my time it was SINS with a few ESGMs being retrofitted.  ESGN was the next class.  Unless we were in the Med tracking LORAN, BRN-8 was our best fix - been awhile, but I think we were looking at somewhere around 8 minutes mast exposure.

been off grid solar for the last 20 years-apparently-the inverter smooths out the sinewave and stabilises the voltage-no blackouts,no brownouts,no problems when the neighbour fires up the 3phase welder etc and no ragged brown crap coming down the line.
now-Tesla expect to build 1 billion of their Power Wall batteries and Mr Musk believes that we can be responsible for our own electricity-wow-what a novel idea.
Coal fired power plants versus the Sun.
You cant buy or sell solar radiation so there`s no profit and little altruism.
storage has always been the downside but that is all about to change.
    brave new world?
    maybe..

The big solar farms use molten salts for storage.  I wonder how practical that would be scaled down to residential size?

And seriously, we all know caves stay steady temp year round.  Why aren't we living in caves?  Yes, I'm aware that some of are mistaken for cave dwellers from time to time.

Why aren't solar water heaters more wide spread?

even the best systems are currently only efficient for a few months a year and unless you live in Flagstaff or similar and have a massive array, you need instantaneous gas heating backup, especially if you are off-grid.
-solar water temp right now is 19c,outside temp 8c but fortunately we have 300 year old tech-a water jacket on the back of the wood heater although it is illegally plumbed as finding someone to integrate the solar water/wood water/gas water was impossible as it would void warranties and fire regulations etc, blah blah

the main impediment IMHO is that once you sell the solar water/solar power infrastructure there is,apart from some maintenance and the obvious life of any system,no further revenue stream for power suppliers who rely on base load fossil burning generation and we have one of the biggest reserves of dirty brown coal in the world.
we also have the highest quality yellow cake uranium we sell to everyone else but don't think is safe enough for us-that is way more complicated than solar/wind/wave/bio generation.
don`t get me started or I will bore you all with my views on apathy and not turning the light off and leaving things on standby when you are finished.
they have justed granted exploration leases for brown coal 60 k from here so will need to dust off the organic hand woven beanie made from the abandoned nest of an endangered Leadbeaters Possum and once again join the others on the picket line.
    don`t get me started...........
    cheers

Does it take more electricity to record at higher sample rates?

    No.

Well, actually it does.. not so that you would notice though these days, but as every single time a gate switches from 0 to 1, or 1 to 0 it consumes energy then higher sampling rates would have higher power consumption...

Isn't that what I said in the first reply?
