Electro-acoustic

Guys this is a bit of a general problem so sorry for it not being specifically Cakewalk related but I've recently bought a Yamaha CPX700 electro-acoustic but bizarrely when I try and record it, the pickup seems to be picking up a sound signal from the monitors - and that's finding it's way onto the recording.

When I turn the monitors down the recording level indicator disappears. When I turn the monitors up, there's a tiny signal level displaying on the sound levels indicators in Cakewalk. The sound coming out of the monitors is somehow being picked up by the guitar and registering on the level indicators. It's as is the pickup on the Yamaha is picking up stuff it shouldn't.

Am I missing something here?

Thanks

YC

No, you're not missing anything--except for maybe some headphones to wear while tracking.

The body of the guitar resonates with the sound coming from the speakers. This is amplified by the on-board pickups and sent into your computer. The pickups aren't full-range (like mics are), but they're sensitive.

I have a Yamaha electro-acoustic guitar, too. If you plug it into an amp and turn the volume up high enough, you can shout "Watson, come here, I need you!" into it, and hear something resembling that coming out of your amp speaker.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for your response. I guess headphones are indeed the answer. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't a fault with the guitar.

The pickup must be sensitive. I don't monitor at loud volumes at all. This is the first time I've ever owned an electro-acoustic so I've not experienced this before. I guess due to their solid nature, you don't get this problem with electrics!

    Thanks again

Yeah, it was a bit of an eye-opener for me too, at first.

You might also find you still want to mic the guitar, anyway. The on-board pickups are handy, but they probably won't give you the full-bodied, warm tone you want from the guitar.

And if you mic it, you'll definitely want headphones!

yep.  don't monitor with monitors or the pickup will pick it up!

A little similar: If you put your electric wrist watch close to the strings of an electric guitar, you can hear the ticking in the monitors.
At least it happens with my Citizen and Ibanez.
