Yikes, sorry to hear that! I have Live installed along side Sonar and Cubase with no problems. But on the other hand, I'm still running Live 7... haven't had the chance to upgrade yet so maybe there's something problematic with the installer. Hope it gets resolved for you. Live really is an extraordinary creative tool.

Oh I'm not gonna give up.  Just "for now" I am.   Time is always the issue.

I definitely want to see what Live has to offer.  But demo versions are notorious for bad installs for some reason.

I'll work it out I'm sure.  Just need to find a long stretch of time to see what it's doing/installing poorly so I can work around it.

It's also possible it's just the 8.1.3 demo version that has an issue.

Good luck with it. I do believe that Ableton has had some quality control issues recently. They've posted publicly about how they want to resolve that and focus in on stability and bugs, so I wonder if there's something like that happening with you. I believe they'll get it straightened out, though. The basic concepts in Live are simply brilliant, and I love to use it as a creative sketch pad before I move the project over to something like Sonar or Cubase. For what it's worth, I think it's a great companion tool to use along side Sonar. Hope you get a fair chance to evaluate its real features, not its installation bugs. :)

I downloaded a demo version last year - probably live 7.  The workflow is totally different that a typical DAW.  But it's workflow for what it is designed to do is groundbreaking.  I didn't buy it - all my projects are in Sonar, and I'm not creating "techno" projects.  But if I were, I would probably buy it.

What struck me was how fast I learned it with their on-line tutorial.  The strategy of putting a lot of resources into a very slick on-line tutorial and integrated context sensitive help is crucial to building a customer base fast - especially with a product that is so different.

Thanks Eratu.  I submit that most software have quality control issues lol.  And I think I'd probably adapt quickly with it because it looks like it's a "Matrix" style approach.   Having spent time with Project 5 for awhile, one of the things I liked most about it was the groove matrix approach.

Anyway - when I get some more free time, I'll continue exploring with it.

I almost feel guilty talking about a competitor on this forum lol ... but that being said, I received an email after getting the trial authorized (the free 30 day trial) with some link(s) to tutorials, so I do intend to check those out.

Ableton Live isn't really a competitor, so have no guilt! LOL! It's a tool that has several areas of overlap -- including some good DAW features -- but you cannot replace some of the broader, more mature DAW features that Sonar has. Live wasn't designed to be a DAW, no matter how much they keep on adding in. Heck, Live isn't even x64 yet! But again, as a creative companion tool, it really is great to add to your arsenal, along side Sonar, etc.

Ok I won't feel guilty then ;)

However, thanks for all your input on this.  It helps understand it more.

I've got Live 8.1 but I still mostly use Sonar for making electronic music.  Live is great for trying various combinations of loops to build an arrangement. It's also great for the easy(ier) way you can alter an arrangement in a live situation. And, as I always point out at every opportunity, Sonar's Matrix can't trigger external midi instruments but Live can.

Thanks for the input.  Yeah, the Matrix is fine (or even the Media Browser) for checking loops out with varying degrees of sophistication (or lack thereof), so I wouldn't really need something like Live for that.  But I'm still curious if it's a better app in other regards for other things.

My first daw was Sonar, but while aging and earning more money other programs became available. Live from Ableton, Reason/Record from Proppelheads and even Fruity Loops from Image-Line,  came to my attention when Project V stopped .  In my case it is not Sonar OR Live but Sonar AND Live .

To get a little more insight about the possibilities of Live I suggest to do a search in youtube.

One of the great guys you wil find is Tom.: http://www.cosm.co.nz/

PS Billy i liked your songs with vocals

Thanks for the info ... I have been checking BoobTube, er YouTube ;)

Thanks for the compliment about the songs w. vocals.  Funny thing is - a lot of people say that to me and I just don't get it.  Those happen to be older tracks, though I like the songs -- I never felt I was a great singer.  Backgrounds maybe, but leads, nah lol.

Thanks anyway (I like my newer stuff hehe).
