Welp...for better or worse he was a huge influence on me in the seventies. Tumbleweed Connection, Madman Across The Water, Honky Chateau...especially. Incredible singer. Amazing pop melody maker. Obtuse Bernie Taupin lyrics. I ate em up with a spoon.

Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding (that I posted in the Best Intro thread) was a big favorite of mine and the radio stations just loved us for requesting it over and over. Eventually, they would have to play it even though it was WAY over the normal 3 minute (+/-) song.

I enjoyed some of the music, like everyone else ... but the lyrics were just clever, and you knew they would sound ... rather boring ... when it got old. I can appreciate a couple of things here and there, but if there is anything that I see is a man not ageing well, and looking worse for it. I think he needs a good rest without a piano, and just enjoy the sunrise and sunset for a while! Might find another song or two that will make a lot more sense.
Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

There was an interesting documentary from HBO Films a few years ago about a collaboration on an album between Elton John and Leon Russell. You can see all 90 or so minutes of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7K9EEa7CRs What blew me away was the way they collaborated. Prepare ahead of time and rehearse? No way. Just go into a full-blown studio costing heaven knows how much an hour and just start playing around. No way the words "Elton John" and "frugal" often end up in the same sentence.

His career took a bit of a dip around 1981/82 at least as far as selling enough tickets to fill a stadium. (I may be out by a year or so, but that's what the passage of time does to the ol' brain cells) I remember being amazed to find him doing a more 'provincial' tour again and as part of that tour he came to the Liverpool Empire theatre. To me he was still the 'superstar' and I was thrilled to get tickets (albeit for a full house, he was still quite a draw) to his show with the full Elton John Band. It was being up close and personal that you really get a chance to see what true talent and star quality is. A quite exceptional night, unexpected, and never forgotten for me and I am sure the couple of thousand others there on that night. EDIT: The memory was serving me well after all. It was the 'Jump Up' tour of 1982 as detailed here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jump_Up_Tour What's interesting is that the itinerary for the UK really is as provincial as I remember it was at the time. Mind you, finishing 1982 with 16 consecutive nights at the Hammersmith Odeon was no mean feat !

One thing I've noticed about these older musicians is that if they let themselves go they look their ages. Not Eltie..he got the hair transplant and might have had a few things lifted. Imagine how he would look with no hair or lifts.Probably has new teeth too.

haha I think it's funny that they even have a *most important gay people* list. Believe me,they quickly forget their humble beginnings! As far as the tranz thing lately. I think if people truly realized what tranz people go through, really walked in their pumps, they'd realize what a small sacrifice it is to make their lives better. Opponents act like it's some huge deal, it's not! It's not the downfall of western civilization!
