Email From Bandlab-Register for New Account?
Hello; I got an email today from Bandlab asking me to register and start a new account with their company. This is fine with me and I will do that but my question is, will anything have to change about the DAW I'm currently using, which is Sonar X3 Studio? I'm sure that the new flagship product will be amazing but I'm not interested in changing anything about my DAW until I absolutely have to because for the past year or so I've finally gotten comfortable with it and its functionality. But if it's just giving them my UN & PW, I'm fine with that now. Thanks: John B.

Nothing will change about old versions of Sonar. How would that happen? If you are thinking it would be an update that overwrites your X3, no, there is no updating happening. It will be a new DAW that you can download for free and try out. Your beloved X3 will still reside untouched on your computer. Sonar has always allowed us to keep our old versions side by side. For a while I had 8.5, X1 LE, X3e, Professional and Platinum all on the same computer. I now only have Home Studio and Platinum. I really don't need Home Studio but I like working in it's uncluttered environment. And it never crashes.

Great news. Thanks. I figured as much but I just wanted to hear it from somebody. John B

I got that EMail as well and signed up. From what it said, they're going to shutdown the current cakewalk servers when they have moved all our registrations over. Prepare yourselves, since there are bound to be birth pains when they cut over. Make sure you have downloaded all your installs get a copy of all your registrations just incase.

I signed up for Bandlab a few weeks ago using the same e-mail as my Sonar account, so I know I should be good to go. But sometimes things go wrong. It would be nice for each user to have a way to confirm that no future action is necessary - that their e-mails have been matched. I know it could all get sorted out later if a user has a problem, but I'd hate to be trying to contact Bandlab because mine didn't work when everyone else was having fun with the new release.

I just created my account via the link. It was literally about three clicks and I was done. It filled in my Username and I give it a password and done. Would be great if the coming weeks would be that smooth. Maybe it will be. Donny

I did not see that either in a specific statement or by implication. The result of shutting down the legacy/backend Cakewalk servers would likely be to render anything you had purchased from Cakewalk no longer obtainable, or no longer capable of activating, effectively killing your chances of installing previously purchased Cakewalk software in the event you move to a new computer or your old computer dies for some reason. If that is true, it is a major calamity for users of older Cakewalk software. My impression was that BandLab intends to keep old Cakewalk customers' purchases accessible and capable of re-installation if needed, but I do not know if this is true.

I have yet to make an account at BandLab. I may or may not buy the new BandLab version of Sonar, and if I did, I would need to create an account for downloads, activation, etc. I would also make an account at BandLab if BandLab stores CW products I have already purchased and the authentication codes needed to activate those products. I have no idea if BandLab intends to do this, and I can see how a new owner may not be interested in dealing with the baggage of the older CW owners. BandLab after all owes us CW customers nothing - tho' BandLab may want to be nice to get people like me to buy their new DAW. So yeah - the smart move for me is to download everything I want off the CW server and archive it.

Here's a rough copy/paste of the email I received, without links:
Important Cakewalk News: Get Your New Account Now
In case you missed the news, Cakewalk is very much alive!
Last month, the team at BandLab Technologies were very pleased to welcome Cakewalk to the BandLab family. We’re now very close to announcing our product plans, so get ready for some more exciting news in the coming weeks!
In the meantime, it’s important that you make a BandLab account to ensure that we are able to keep track of your past purchases and ownership history. You can also sign up on your mobile device by downloading the BandLab app from the Google Play Store or the App Store.
GET YOUR ACCOUNT NOW
Please jump in and do this in the next two weeks so we can tag your Cakewalk ID to your new account as we migrate databases and wind down the legacy server. Your BandLab account will be what you use to authenticate and activate the new flagship product when it is launched and will bring more features and services to your Cakewalk experience in the future.
Signing up for a BandLab account is completely free and also means you get access to the full suite of BandLab features and tools for creators.
In order to make sure you get the appropriate upgrade or crossgrades in the future, if and when they are available - please make sure that you sign up for BandLab with the same email you used for your Cakewalk products.
For the thousands of Cakewalk users who have already signed up for BandLab with the same email address as your Cakewalk account: you don’t need to do anything, we’ve already tagged your Cakewalk ID to your new BandLab account!
Enjoy the time you've got, because it's all the time you get.

That's just what I did. I went into my CW account and DLed all of the install files for X3 and the (last) e update and I'd rather stick with that for as long as I can. Perhaps I'll check out the flagship when it comes out and if like it I might even try installing it, if its functionality is similar to X3. But honestly, at almost 63 years old, I'm getting too old to learn new tricks. I would if I had to at this point, but I'd rather stick to the familiar. JB

Wouldn't it be possible for them to make legacy software available through any new website they put up? I've seen companies that did that already. JB

For some reason I stopped receiving emails from Cakewalk a couple of years ago. Didn't bother me, since I kept up with things through the forum, and my account still worked fine. I've always been able to upgrade through CCC, access my Cakewalk store account through my normal sign-in, etc. But I haven't received an email from Bandlab yet. Should I just sign up using my Cakewalk username, or is there something else I should do?

In order for the Command Center to continue working, you need to create a BandLab account. The user name does not matter. The email address needs to be the same as the one in your Cakewalk account.

Thanks Scook, I'll get on that later today. I hope Bandlab recognizes the email address. It's the same one I've always used, but evidently Cakewalk lost track of it since I stopped receiving the emails and haven't gotten one from Bandlab. We'll see what happens...

Whether Cakewalk used the email address does not matter. The email address is the unique identifier in your Cakewalk account that tells BandLab what products you own. This is similar to the Single Sign On move Cakewalk performed a few years ago.

Thank you scook for your important and informative reply. Very helpful indeed. Do you know if BandLab plans to make the legacy CW products available to us legacy CW consumers when they bring their new servers on-line? (I always thought you were a CW employee - so I am surprised to see you still active here - pleasantly surprised because I find your forum posts to be full of good and accurate info.)

They will probably assign a redirect to key cakewalk addresses like cakewalk.com and forum.cakewalk.com prior to shutting down the servers. If they bought all the intellectual property then they probably also bought the Domain names as well, but I don't know anything for sure.

Last things first - I am not and never have never been a Cakewalk employee. All Cakewalk products are legacy products. The company stopped development last year. I would strongly recommend everyone with a Cakewalk account download all of their products and save their account page. Where possible, I have never relied on a company to store my installers and registration information (including Cakewalk). Even if you are planning to create a BandLab account (and you should if you plan on using future products based on SONAR) storing all your purchases and purchase information locally is important. It may come in handy if there is an issue with account migration.
