Emerald Eyes

Here's a new guitar song...with a Latin flavor. It is guitar driven....with lots of harmony and stuff....

I actually composed this tune quite some time back but I had a difficult time trying to get very far with it.... I'd lay down some tracks, and not like them...delete and let it set. I decided to make it a guitar song and it seems to be working.

9 tracks... 5 of them are guitars so I could have the parts fit without overlapping. 2 are acoustic.

Emerald Eyes

Enjoy.... and comment.

Gracias!

    Herb

I can hear the Latin influence and could see Santana playing parts of this. Of course he would do it a ton faster in some areas.

The only crit I have at all is the placement of the acoustic that is playing individual notes. It seems to be right on top of one of the leads.

    Very nice piece

    Very nice stuff Herb.

The opening note of the guitar sounds fuzzy / too distored.

The guitar is very nice but maybe a touch less reverb or otherwise warm the track to bring it a little more to the front.

Good composition - and you don't need lots of notes like Santana, form over quantity!  Very melodic and meldoy is everything!

very nice herb, but you've got the melody for a famous song in there, I can't remember it right now - that's going to bug me until I do remember what it is.  but was that intentional?

Beagle let me know when you figure it out....

No...that was not intentional. Now to figure out what song...and just how close. If it's too close for comfort I will relegate it to the ash heap... .... It does have a familiar/classic tune to it.  Or... is it just a tune that reminds you of a famous song. Or... is it a flash of brilliance and a new classic melody?

Santana's Europa maybe? In the refrain...... I sure hope not.... I haven't heard Europa in some time.....

EDIT: just listened to Europa.... that's not it.... but it's amazing .... Carlos plays a lot like me.... hummmmmmm

    Hi G.H.

Great song..I even liked the tittle.

Do you yet have vocals for it? I say this because your song relates to the music that I am familiar with, and all of them have lyrics...Not meaning to impose anything, though.

I enjoyed it. It's very well done.

    Thank you for posting it.

Cool song and great playing, Herb.

I think Santana comparisons are inevitable with
this chord progression and your guitar tone but
it's absolutely meant as a compliment!

I always like your guitar harmonies.

    Hey Herb,

Sounds a little reminiscent of "This Masquerade", but it's not a quote. Great feel, very sweet melodically. I have to agree about the arpeggiated acoustic being a little distracting where it is in the mix. Seems a bit thin as well. I think you need a warmer sound there.

Really dig the chord progression.  Lead guitar sounds just a tad brittle.  I think the electric piano may be just a bit too present.  Awesome playing my friend.

haha!  this is funny!  Sept 5, 2009 I posted a thread in the Coffee House and I posted a link to a soundclick song with a keyboard snippet of a melody that I had stuck in my head and couldn't figure out what it was.  Gregy57 and KenB123 figured out it was "Hearts" by Marty Balin (former Jefferson Starship member).

That's the same melody I'm hearing in your song!!!

see if you think this is close to part of the melody of your song:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSZITC4tEes

it's not exactly the same and the tempo of yours is a lot slower, but it's close enough, I think - at least to remind me of this song!

You never fail to amaze me... unless you are making it up knowing that we will not take the time to check....... Sept 5, 2009...... what's the matter, can't remember the time?    That was a cool tune, it's similar but not close enough to have me sweating a phone call from a lawyer.

I'll see if I can do a screen shot of the music for you.

anyway - it's not exactly the same, just similar enough to remind me of it I guess!

oh - and I think I have already figured out that particular melody part on the keyboard...you're in they Key of Emaj, I beleive.

I'm not sure of the final key (the key written is the right one)......and the melody is not exact as you will see if you follow along.

hmm - definitely not Emaj - guess I'm hearing it wrong.

but I'm confused - you're posting the melody of the pad, not the guitar - I was actually talking about the guitar part (starting at 0:10 but repeats throughout the song).  is the guitar playing this part as well?

    Hi Herb

I like this a lot, loving the tone on the melody.

The acoustic playing the arps if anything need to occupy much more space and come up in volume it's but a thin tinkling distraction just now, like you're hiding it. (monitoring too loud when mixing I'll bet... )

The rest of the midi stuff sounds a little like filler just now as far as sounds go but it's all the right idea musically for a background to those sublime guitar sounds.

    Well played Sir!

Yeah... if you follow the notes it is close to the melody of the refrain that appears throughout the song.... I did not play the melody as written exactly...... I took some liberty with it to make it more interesting and fun to play..... and expanded it a bit and took it to other places, coming back to the refrain as needed.

This is really, really sweet, Herb. The song is reminiscent of many songs but not to any one in particular. I think your progression is unique enough. Sounds like a definite latin (Carlos) progression with just a hint of Brazilian maybe Sergio Mendez? I really like the keys which give it that Marty Balin sound.  I really enjoy all of your stuff. Such a wonderful variety but you always pack a nice unique expression to whatever style your dealing with.

Solid performacen, no nits what so ever.

good handling of the instruments, and tracking of them as well. The mix sounds pretty bang on target as well.

Did I mention it sounds really good? :D

    Hi Herb.
Nice song.   I love the guitar playing (as always!)...but the background sounds are a little elevator music-ish.  They take the edge off too much IMO.  (I would add some bongos....seems to be my favorite recommendation!   I should try it.)
