E-mu 1820 (not "m") Is it worh to buy for 130$ ?

Hi all,

I know, that I should ask in Hardware section but I hope yu will help me here ;)
I have oportunity to buy (used? post-service?) E-mu 1820 with 2-month warranty.
for now I have Edirol M16-DX and Edirol UA-1000.

That's my question, because I rarely use these two interfaces at once (due to I have to merge them with asio4all drivers, which are just "better" WDM drivers), and I want to plug in some external processors.

Using E-mu as a main interface and Edirol UA-1000 as a AD-DA concerter I have what I want, but I'm wondering about quality of E-mu converters (ok, SOUND), and I don't know is E-mu multidriver capable (using the same time Sonar and play back on Windows Media Player or using youtube)....

Anyone?

Not sure I perfectly understand your intentions, but here are my thoughts:

    - $130 is a decent price, even though this interface is getting long in the tooth. I paid $280 for mine used a few years ago.

    - I love this thing. Great sound, good low latency performance (5.9ms RTL with 2ms buffers) excellent MIDI port performance, and lots I/O flexibility.

    - I've had some issues with it that others have also reported, the last three of which are due to problems with the x64 driver:

    1. The outputs occasionally go nearly silent for a moment. This could be a problem with failing capacitors on the output, which is a common bugaboo, but since it has not increased in frequency or severity over time, I tend to think it's a firmware problem.

    2. Relatively infrequent but bothersome BSODs, most often when changing track I/O settings or closing projects. This is a Win7/x64 driver problem. I never saw it on this same hardware platform until I upgraded to Win7 x64 from XP x86. E-MU says the driver "should" work with the 1820m, but it's a legacy product, and no longer supported.

    3. With the x86 driver, only ports explicitly enabled in the 1820m's Session file were exposed to the O/S, and they would show with friendly names entered in the Session config. With the x64 driver, it exposes a generic list of 32 Input/Output pairs.

4 The above is all based on using the ASIO driver. The WDM driver does not work in x64; it exposes only one stereo pair of inputs and outputs.

All things considered, I'm sorry to say I can't really recommend it for anyone who wants to use it in an x64 environment.

thanks for your answer - that's I was wondering about.

It looks like it'll be better to buy (not cheap unfortunately) 1212 PCIE and audiodock from "M" version, then use Edirol UA-1000 as a AD-DA ADAT converter.

In a fact - this "old" interface (Edirol UA-1000) looks like it works perfectly in Win7/64, but for now my main i/f is Edirol M16-DX because of 16 physical inputs.
For now it's enough for me, but I can't do any external processing......
I can put these two Edirols together (as one 24-16) using asio4all drivers to increase number of ins and outs, but it's just  a tricky and not quite good way.

And because of I don't have enough money to buy a Motu or another M-audio - I look for a cheap and good way to increase number of ins and outs, but don't increase bugs or latency..

WDM allows for aggregating interfaces. I normally use ASIO, but sometimes when I needed a lot of inputs, I'd use several interfaces in WDM mode.

I have a 1616m that I would sell for $200 or best offer. I live in the states though.

with win 7, unless you get a PCIe version of 1212m, 1616m, etc., you will be stuck with a beta driver. works most of the time but has issues!! the E-MU cards are good if you get the PCIe version with the proper win 7 driver. Otherwise don't!
