Emulate a TB-303
Hey all, I was watching a video of Ceephax Acid Crew ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceephax_Acid_Crew) and he was using one of the old TB-303's. I had a look on ebay and they are super expensive. I'm wondering if there is a way for us to get a similar sound in X1? Including things like slide/accent. Is there a specific synth/effects I should use? Cheers

The simple, but unfortunate, answer is that there's nothing that does it bang on but there's plenty of stuff that's nearly there. I always quite liked the refx claw synth: http://www.alexanderblu.c...ownload/download_9.htm Load up the step sequencer and away you go. Rebirth still makes a pretty good fist of it too. Child

There's also the (hardware synth) x0xb0x which can be picked up as a kit or ready assembled for much less than a 303. I've not got one, but the one I heard was pretty indistinguishable from the Roland original.
Sonar Platinum 64bit, Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit, I7 3770K Ivybridge, 16GB Ram, Gigabyte Z77-D3H m/board, ATI 7750 graphics+ 1GB RAM, 2xIntel 520 series 220GB SSDs, 1 TB Samsung F3 + 1 TB WD HDDs, Seasonic fanless 460W psu, RME Fireface UFX, Focusrite Octopre. Assorted real synths, guitars, mandolins, diatonic accordions, percussion, fx and other stuff.

The best 303 emulator is this one right here: http://www.audiorealism.se/ I have the old one (version 1) which has been around for maybe 10 years now. I dont know what magic software fairy dust they sprinkled it with, but its a spot on emulation, and ive owned several hardware 303's. it looks like they are only selling ABL2 now here: http://www.audiorealism.se/abl2/index.htm im sure its the same, but better.

(and almost half the cost!)

yup i own the d16 one and it is good, but its not as pure 303 as the audiorealism version. of course they also sell the pro (own) which sounds good but ALSO isnt a pure 303. still, both (all 3) are great music making tools. forgot to say earlier, dont even TRY to emulate the 303 with CW. it cant be done. the sound of the 303 to me is in the accents, slides, and legato that it does like no other synth.

Imo that's more down to the quirks of the sequencer than the synth, which is why rebirth is a good tool because one programs the sequencer in a very similar way. Nevertheless I don't think it would be impossible to make a good fist of it using the step sequencer and some imagination / programming chops. The thing that I've found all the 303 emulations I've tried over the years (including owning a real, analogue, emulation 'Deep Bass Nine') is that they all lack the sort of rubbery twang in the attack that seems to mark out a real 303. Cheers everyone. What about using the Groove Synth? Seems to have a few 303 presets.

mattox82 Cheers everyone. What about using the Groove Synth? Seems to have a few 303 presets. Lots of things have 303 presets, including many home keyboards. They will sound similar to a single snapshot sample of a 303 sound, but you will miss the control element. There is a reason people pay stupid money for the real thing. Many years ago I use to have a 303 and could not wait to trade it in. (But I wish I had kept it until it became fasionable and then sold it . ) Unless you really want an accurate emulation of the 303 sound most analogue synths or VSTi synth emulations will give you a different but similar squelchey high Q bass sounds. The 303's slide and accent were unique but do you want exactly the sound every one else is using? I would play around with Pentagon.
