Encounter with the Event Horizon

I started this one yesterday and finished it up today.

Being so close to it, I wonder if the theme has been varied enough, or does this seem a bit too repetitive?

Watch out in the middle when the approach is too close to the singularity.
Relatively speaking, it does get much louder.

Here it is:

The samples are EWQLSO GOLD, EWQLSO RA and GPO

Comments are appreciated

i was immediately captured by a sense of space - it really zeroed me in on the music.

i really like the themes in the first couple minutes, very moving. in the second bit of the first movement i thought things maybe lost direction a little?

the loud section seems a little over-compressed. it takes away from the dynamics i think, which would give it more impact. the return to the first theme is good although the ending doesn't quite resolve for me.

overall it's impressive and moving - the main theme is definitely soundtrack worthy.

At one point I used the Boost 11 and forgot to remove it from my final mix.

I have done so now and think it works better.

This is the only ending that comes to mind right now, but who knows what may happen.

    Thanks

Awesome production, great composition, being a Sci fi fan, this would be great music to listen to if I ever encounter an event horizon. The dissonant part must be where the enemy aliens are encountered. Great job!!

I was listening to some of your other songs earlier. Really good stuff. This is no exception . For some reason, it reminds me a lot of Mahler, which from my point of view is a very good thing.

I'm really surprised you aren't a music major. This stuff is already deserving of full orchestra treatment. I would love to listen to a good orchestra take a crack at your music.

Your skills with the light saber grow my young padiwan. You are making those orchestra plugins shine. I think you could stand to loose the high strings in the "dissonant" part. Then you would have "dissonance without dissonance" if you know what I mean.

    Cheers

Nicely done. Well paced, a gentle leading with careful restraint in the intro, nice gentle broil of instruments taking turns at the leading. The dissonant part was, well, dissonant, but short lived and the wrap up was nicely arranged with a sense of maturity and purpose. Very nice, could see this as a soundtrack for an adventure or a meaningful documentary.

    Hi Ron,

This is a nice piece. You got a great knack for easing back into the piece after a little fire and brimstone. The instrument sound quality is really good as well. I'll have to back and listen to some of your many other posts I've missed as I know you push these out like a mouse in labor. Really good stuff.

The dissonace is actually when I got to close to the black hole. We are the enemy aliens.

    Madratter

I am 50 years old. With a Math Major I am sure I can get a job. If I would have studied music like I want to, I am not sure of a job. Simple economics. I would also love to have any orchestra play my music. Maybe they will in a couple of hundreed years.

    Robby

This one is the proof that I can do more than straight dissonance and slow down some as well.

    John

I will watch out for you on the other site as well.

    Shad

I know that the dissonant section is not done yet. I can hear it in my head but am having trouble getting it out. Maybe I cancut it out with my Lightsabre. That is the main job of one right? Cutting into brains?

    Bill

I had the picture in my head of a discovery channel show talking about Black Holes when I composed this, so I agree with you completely.

I had an Encounter with an Event Horizon once.

I went to the doctor about it, I said to him "I have this sense of impending doom, what is it?"

    He said "Impending doom"....

I love this I don't understand why you aren't scoring films and stuff, or are you?

You have a really extensive emotional vocabulary to your music and this example is no exception.

    Great stuff.

    Ron,

This is right up my street, love the tune. You have captured the essence of East Wests software, You should send it to them, as they would be proud to have this on their demo page as shows that with great skills such as yours what can be accomplished.
I'm sure it would sell a lot more software for them too.

Amazing,Ron. My fave of your work...(so far)

Those oboes sound quite authentic. Do you have an education in orchestration or arrangement? You know how to set up a pallet and your arent' afraid of broad strokes either.

This puts that emotive sappy canned crap in Hollywood to shame.

    Jon

I am a full time student that has little time to compose for fun let alone for profit. If I was ever offered the chance though, of course I would turn it down to keep my music pure.

    Yeah right!!!

I hope that Impending doom isnt contagious.

    My Fav

I think you have hit the nail on the head with an important aspect of music. You got to have a great opening that hooks the listener and then you can lead them wherever you desire. That first 5-10 seconds are so important.

As to you being able to do it, all it takes is practice.

    Montezuma

I can see where you thought of The Natural, great movie.

    Mark

They have a ton of talent over there at EW. I would just be a touch of a flicker in their light.

    No How

I have 10 hours of study that I did one semester in Composition. The rest of my studies in music has been done thru years of listening to the Classical Giants. Beethoven, Prokofiev, Bach, Mozart.....etc.

I hope to someday get some real formal training as it would make doing what I do so much easier.

I think what works so well with the Oboes in this is having 2 Libraries to work with. Just as in a real orchestra each instument sounds a little different, the realness can be found thru having multiple patches of Oboes, and the other instruments.

This is my favorite so far as well. I used to say that all the time when I did a new one, but it has been a while. It is a good feeling to be able to say that again.

    THanks guys!!!

    Yo Ron,

Very interesting, warm and melodic orchestral composition. For me, it has a Scandinavian/Icelandic feel, the way it ebbs and flows with sustained brass and string section lines. The gradual shifts in dynamics are very evocative. I like the way the very quiet passages are highlighted by different sonic space- kinda like they are being played from the back of the theater balcony.
The soundscape is broad and richly textured.

As far as repititions are concerned, some of my favorite pieces make good use of repitition- they set a pulse and form a matrix that unify the composition. Gorecki's 3rd symphony and Barber's Adagio For Strings come to mind.

    All around great stuff.

    Cheers,

    Bert

I like what's going on here a lot. I was waiting for it to get going though. It started to for a bit but went back to meandering along. As for what's there, It is really nice and captures the theme very well. I just think there is not enough build up to the tension and to little of the tension.

    Soundwise it is very good.

All in all, very well done!
