Endless Crashes

Allow me to preface this by stating that I have been a Cakewalk customer for years, starting with Home Studio and working on up through succeeding versions of Sonar. I have been plagued with dropouts, crashes, etc., and have always attributed the problems to pilot error or substandard operating systems/computers. I decided to upgrade to a dedicated DAW, expecting (finally), a good running system. The specs are as follows:

Windows 7/64 bit
Intel Core i3-550 processor(4MB Cache, 3.20GHz)
4GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz - 4x1GB
750GB - SATA-II 3Gb/s 7200RPM, 16MB Cache HDD

Tonight, after two hours of work, Dimension Pro crashed my system. I lost two hours of work that can not be retrieved.
Needless to say, I am pissed.

Are there any fixes/tweaks necessary to run Sonar Producer 8.5 on a Win7 machine, or should I shop for another DAW that will not destroy files and crash?

The crash occurred with an M-Audio Mobile Pre. I also have a Delta 44, but cannot run them simultaneously.

Thanks for the kind comment on our site.

Is the Usb plugged directly to your PC or is it in a hub?
    Is it a 2.0 connection?
Do you have an onboard soundcard, and if so is it disabled?
Are you using the ASIO drivers?
I'm sure that you've done the following but what the hay I'll throw it at ya. This comes from Cakewalk..

Click Options | Audio | Advanced.  Set your Driver Mode to ASIO.  If you do not see Driver Mode, make sure the box next to “Always use mme interface” is NOT checked.  Click OK and restart the program.
    Next, Click Options | Audio:
    On the Drivers tab:
Make sure your M-Audio card is selected under both inputs and outputs.  If it appears grayed out, deselect all drivers, in both inputs and outputs, then select your M-Audio card.  If changes are made, click OK and restart the program.

NOTE: M-Audio also provides very reliable WDM drivers. If you experience problems in ASIO Driver Mode, you may want to consider using WDM as an alternative.
    On the general tab:
Make sure one of your M-Audio card drivers is selected as Playback Timing master.  Click OK.  Restart the program if prompted.

Finally, all audio playback will occur from the M-Audio device itself.  Make sure you have your speakers or headphones connected to its outputs.

Hope this helps you. Keep us posted on your outcome..

    1)  Autosave is your friend.

    2)  Even with a PC that's a dedicated DAW, you still need to "tweak" it to stabilize for audio use.  There are a number of good sites that can give you these tweaks.

    3)  Despite being hugely popular, Windows 7 is still in its infancy (service pack 1 hasn't even been released yet).  Consequently, drivers can be a bit dicey.  Some audio interface manufacturers offer workaround suggestions like using legacy or Vista drivers - especially with firewire devices.

    4)  Desktop or laptop?  With the latter, the FW chipset may not be audio-compatible, and because of the integrated FW architecture, adding a "good" FW express card doesn't get around the problem, so will not work.  (With desktops, you can disable the "bad" onboard FW and buy a "good" add-on FW PCI card for less than $30).

    5)  In addition to the tweaks mentioned in #2, many newer systems require disabling "effeciency" features (usually in the BIOS) like Speedstep, Core-parking, etc.  Again, there are websites that can guide you through this.

Any questions or comments on the above, of course, just post back.

Where did you buy that dedicated DAW system? You shouldn't be having crash problems with a dedicated DAW system.

There are some DAW builders that frequent this forum and that give full technical support when you buy a DAW system from them.

    1) Jim Roseberry: http://www.studiocat.com/2/index.php/Home

    2) jcschild of ADK Pro Audio: http://www.adkproaudio.com/choose2.asp

You might want to consult one of these DAW builders.

I don't know the other audio interface you mentioned, but the M-Audio Delta 44 is a good audio interface and and M-Audio release good drivers. The Delta 44 is a tried audio interface that works well with SONAR, so I would first try to get the system running stable using the Delta44.

Install the most recent drivers for it, and see how things go? First try ASIO and then WDM, if needed.

Come back and let us know?

Thanks for the advice. I am going to disable the MobilePre and just use the Delta. I will let you know how that works out.

You are correct, Sir. I should have had autosave on. Duhhh....

Really not fair to blame the program when I didn't take advantage of the fail-safe.

Baloney. I've been using a Delta44 for many years and it works great. Just make sure you have the latest driver for Windows 7 64-bit. I also use a couple of M-Audio MIDISport 2x2s and now that they have a Windows 7 64-bit driver, they work fine. Some people just have an axe to grind.

However, its not a good idea to try to use 2 different soundcards at the same time. You may run into timing problems. If you need more ports, get a soundcard that has more ports.
