"Epiphany" REMIXED a rock song by my band Puppet Cell
Hi guys, I've watched from a far, but this is the first song that i've really felt confident posting. I'm just a garage guy and everything was recorded and mixed by me in my humble studio :-). I'm just really interested to hear what you think. Thanks for listening and here is the link --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks guys for the input., you have no idea how happy the band are with your comments...... Here is my next attempt to make it more dynamic. It was only after Mike's comments I realised how static it sounded.... I've pushed the drums in sections Pulled the vocals back Experimented with pushing some of the gtrs in different places. I've hi passed the Gtrs up to 200 Hz now and added a little Hi end. Weirdly this opened the Bass up :-) I've added some growl to bass and re-EQ'd it (thanks Ed) Experimented with side-chaining a compressor on the gtr bus from the vocals. I NOW see faders moving in the console view. http://snd.sc/PYgpMt All comments gratefully received and appreciated, thanks a tonne for listening again Every day's a school day :-) Paul

I think this is a fine, fine song and recording. It sounds as if it could have come from a high dollar studio. The vocals and instruments are panned so that each element has its own space making the mix sound big. The only thing that stood out for me was the low level of the bass guitar and drums. Each could be boosted a bit, imo, but even as it stands, this is a good production. The vocals were very good as was the arrangement. Fine job.

awesome track. the vocals kinda remind me of Bush a bit, but like if Gavin Rossdale was singing for a sweet concatenation of Iron Maiden and Motorhead. love the guitar work. this is a great listen, dude.

Having heard your AiC style track earlier this is a really huge compliment, thanks. I know Pete the singer will be really made up to hear that.

Well, you sing better that I do. That's a start. Good playing but the mix is overall "muddy". Kick/snare is well defined but the bass is a bit too boomy. Guitars could use low cut and maybe a bit of high end to give it a bit of a more modern feel (if that's what you're going for). Vocals could maybe use a bit of gloss (i.e. EQ). Great first post here STinGA.

Thanks for the constructive comments Bapu, The Guitars are already cut quite sharply but i'll experiment with bringing the cut higher. I hear you on the bass. the one thing I have really struggled with on this mix is the vocals... I'm not really sure what to do about them. Pete (the singer - I'm the drummer) has a very throaty voice so the sounded is very "effected" already. I've left them very un-effected apart from eq and compression and a very "busy" volume envelope especially to De-ess. I will play with the EQ on the vox a little more. Thank you again.... off to play

This song is real solid and it has all the elements in place. It seems like it just needs to be balanced (a.k.a. mixed) to make a more dramatic impression. I'll bet if you sent it out to 5 mixers you'd get 5 different mixes... they'd all have more in common than different yet each would have a certain flair. For example; I'd bury your very good vocals a bit and bring up the guitar bed to integrate it all in to a wall of sound. Then I ride the levels through the song so that the ear followed the arrangement... stuff like bringing the guitar to the front during the solo, and banging the drums hard on the turn arounds. I'd probably put some reverb on the drums too... just to make them sound bigger! You've got a very solid foundation and the vocal is good enough to sit out front like it is... I think if you dare to place back into the band it will all gel together really nicely and result in a, in your face, rock and roll feel. My description of what I'd do is just my opinion... this song seems to have everything a "mixer" needs to express themselves with their particular approach. You can mix this any way you want... so I'd like to encourage you to go for it with some more balancing of the levels. best regards, mike

Thanks Mike for your honest assessment. I've got quite a bit to think about now. The Overiding opinion seems to be that I am oing things correctly and needs a few refinements. I am really happy with what you guys have said.... I'm off to play and see what I can come up with .... I'll post the results for round 2 Thanks all so much :-)

Hey, Paul, This is really a dynamite song, buddy, and your band ROCKS! Cool songwriting and arrangement, great playing, nice chunky guitars and bass, killer drums, and the vocals are fantastic. The mix sounds really good too. I'm also picking up a Maiden vibe on the guitars, along with possibly a touch of early Sabbath tone thrown in. Great stuff, my friend! Bob

Bob, Chaos Choir. Thanks so much for the kind words. Having taken on board every ones comments I have had a dabble with a remix and am about post in a moment Having listened back to the original... I have to agree with Mike and Bapu, and I have tried really hard to put in place what those guys have said. I'm very new to this game so every day is a school day :-) Any how I'll update the link in post #1

This song sounds great and the mix sounds great too. I think heavier bass and kick would just muddy up the mix. I like it as it is; nice and crisp and concise.

It sounds real nice!!! Persoanlly, I like how it is all gelling together. I'm gonna dare say that the vocals can come up... just a very small bit, in the chorus... just so they pop a bit. I want you to know that I am really past my comfort zone when I make suggestions for other people's mixes... but I like this song a bunch and it seemed like you had already done the hardest part by capturing such solid performances. So, I'm just explaining it in terms of what I may do if I was mixing. Hows that for a cop out? :-) all the best, mike

Must be hearing the remix which sounds like a reasonably balanced sound. Thanks for sharing.

Paul, This is really good. I would worry too much about being "a garage guy in a humble studio " Many of us are. You will get some good advice here that will make you even better. I honestly wouldn't change anything about your mix, it sounds good. You could push the bass and kick a little bit if you want any crits, but they work as is.... Regards

Woodie, Darryl, markno. Thanks very much for your comments. I agree that in the chorus the vox can come up, I pushed them back in and I am pleased where they sit now. But the chorus as mike said could come up a little, which I will do. Thanks all for listening.....I really appreciate it. This forum Rocks, initially I was very apprehensive about posting as I wasnt sure how my bands song would be taken, but I have seen what a great bunch everyone is around here.... guitarpima. This is one area, I'm really clueless about.... I'm really interested to know how you would go about improving the vocal. I'm really happy with the way is was sung and it's in tune, but when it comes to processing it I've done nothing but EQ and compress. Thanks very much for listening and your comments.
