Epson Artisan 835 Color Inkjet AIO for CD printing

We're looking at getting a printer that can print CD's.
I'm wondering if any of you folks have had any experience with the Epson 835.
I've seen good and bad reviews from customers online but not much mentioned about how the CD printing performs.

I've got an epson 800 and it looks great.  On it the mechanism looks flimsy, but it ain't broke yet despite my best efforts.  I wouldn't worry too much about the online customer reviews, they are mostly people that have a complaint or trying to justify their expenditures.  I mean, if everyone reports a problem I'd be leary, but if less than half do you figure the hardware can't be that bad, since every mother that had a problem got on line to slam it in revenge.

The Epson "C" series was bad about clogging up but the "R" series is great. That's all you need to print CDs is the R200, R300, or R330.  I've printed lots of CDs on my R300.  In fact had two of them for a long time and neither one gave me any trouble.  The software is easy to use also, you can use a square photo and just position it over the template and it only prints in the printable area of the CD.  I use the glossier printable blanks and they look fantastic. In fact they look "fake" because no retail CD can look that good. The resolution on the screen print is no where near what the printer can do. So you might want to use a low res photo to make them look more like the real thing LOL !

I have an Epson stylus photo R280.  It does a fine job printing on the printable CD's that I need from time to time.

It was my main business printer but I needed to replace a fax machine recently so I went looking and found a multi-purpose machine for less then a fax.... so I bought it, and retired the R-280 to the studio DAW. It now lives a life of leisure, printing lyric sheets and CD's when I need them.

We have the Artisan 835 and it is fantastic.  We also went through 2 R300s and they were way too awkward to work with. One of them put out misaligned prints half the time.

But yeah, the 835 is fantastic. Prints beautifully on discs.

One "problem" I've always had with this is that the ink is still very susceptible to smearing if your fingers are wet.

I started keeping a can of matte clear spray paint on hand.  After printing, a careful and quick pass of the clear keeps everything in place...and waterproof to a much better degree.  And since it rewets the colors and encapsulates them, the colors are much more vibrant.

From what I understand the new ink in the 835 is waterproof after it dries of course.
Can't confirm that since I've not used one yet.
Sometimes what the manufacturer says and reality aren't always the same.

Thanks for all the input everyone. It has been very helpful.

i've not experienced any smear problems with ink. I've been around ink jets long enough to know that it sometimes needs to set a few minutes when printed on glossy surfaces....

It pays to let them set untouched for a few minutes or place them in the jewel case handling only the edges....

No smearing problems here either, using  Epson R200 quite much on both glossy and matte DVDs. You just have to let the ink dry for a few minutes.

    Right.

It never occured to me to let the ink dry.

Or to not touch the printed part.

I have an Artisan 810.  I had some ink drying problems with the original ink supplied.  I called Epson tech support and they sent me a new set of ink cartridges and no more problems.  I'm now using non-Epson ink "remanufactured' cartridges and they are working without problems.

The CD try does seem flimsy but I've probably printed close to 200 discs since I got it last September and no problems.  I had an R200 and that was iffy on printing CD's and sometime the tray assembly would be ejected out the back, and it was slow.  The Artisan is much faster and no tray or printing problems.

I'm using the "Discus" program for CD labels and Jewel Case insets/booklets.

Thanks for your valuable information. I too have the same problem. I have asked so many people about this, but I was not satisfied with that. I got clear information from your explanation.
