Erratic MP3 Issue

Hi,
I have been exporting to MP3s with no problems for quite a while. I am doing it straight out of the stereo mix (File>Export Audio>MP3 presets) and using the encoder that I purchased from Cakewalk. I really dislike MP3s but this thing got the job done and no real complaints.
On a batch of three songs that I just finished, one went through just fine but the other two are really warbly and distorted - unlistenable. I have re-tried repeatedly, removing everything but the track itself - same result. There has been no change in settings, output levels are consistent throughout the tracks, just a little bit of compression (which I also tried removing)  - no other effects. Can anyone tell me what's going on?

Could be the output level is too high or the mp3 bit rate is too low.

It is possible to create compression artifacts when the compression algorithm interacts with the substrate file in such a way as to periodically exaggerate high or low points. The test for this would be to change the compression ratio. In an MP3 that would be the encoding bit rate. If the warbling goes away with a higher bit rate, it might indicate (and solve) this problem, or it might just be that the data is not adequately represented at the lower bit rate. Not enough data--like a jerky film screening if the projector is running the film through at too low a frame rate. If the problem goes away at a lower bit rate, it would almost certainly indicate that this is a compression artifact, caused by the interaction of the compression algorithm at that particular bit rate with the data.

Thanks for the input guys - however, as I said, I have tried this with the compression removed altogether and it still happens. Also, if that were the case, wouldn't it happen on everything? This is not a subtle difference in quality - it's quite literally unlistenable. I've tried it in a new file, without any effects whatsoever. It's only two songs - the other one is fine - as are all the other I have ever converted by this method. I'm kind of stumped.
