Erratic Smart Tool behavior

Is there a trick to making the Smart Tool smarter? If I am mousing over the beginning or end of a clip there is a 90% chance I want to drag it longer or shorter. The Smart Tool seems to think I should adjust the fade instead. I typically search for several seconds to find the magic pixel that allows me shorten/lengthen the clip, and sometimes I cant find it at all. If I do, the act of left clicking will probably cause the mouse to move just enough that I loose it anyway. What am I doing wrong?
