Essential Must Have FREEWARE Vst's???

I had a hard drive crash recently and lost all of my freeware VST's, what are the freeware VST's that you consider a "MUST HAVE" for your daw? I don't mean as in they are pretty good, I mean the ones that you use all the time?

I have a big list on my website links space of vst sites, but I don't want to overload my daw with VST's I will never use, I would rather keep it simple.

Here's the Freeware VST's that I have added so far that I use all the time, or most of the time I should say :

ReaPlugs - Several good ones there.
Electri-Q :Posihfopit edition - I use this one a lot, I hope to upgrade to the pro version sometime in the near future.
GVST Plug Ins - I use a few of these, mostly the GGain, it helps when a track is just too quiet.
Voxengo - I haven't never used these, but there are a couple there that I believe I will start using.

I would have included the  Kjaerhuser Classic plugins Link on that list, but when I go to the site for them I don't see a download option. I did manage to find the package to download them all at once somewhere, but I can't seem to find the link now. Sorry.

That's what I got right now in the freeware department.

Any must have freeware VST's that I am missing?

Bobby

I had accumulated various freeware VSTs over the years but when I switched to my new computer the Voxengo SPAN plug-in was the only one I bothered reinstalling. I use it on every single project I do.

But yeah I used to use the Kjaejuser Classic Chorus plug-in sometimes, too.

Thanks, and it's funny that you mentioned Span, because when I started looking around and saw Voxengo that's the one that made me think I needed to give Voxengo a try.

    Flux stereo tool

I use it almost every project, as in master bus + individual channels.
I only wish, that I could afford other Flux products.

I've got a ton of VST's but four that make it into every project are:
Voxengo SPAN (already mentioned but this truly a "must have")
Nyquist EQ (similar to Posihfopit in some ways, but immensely flexible and unique in its own way)
GTune- a simple tuner for spot checking before recording guitar tracks.
GlaceVerb-I usually put this in a bus. Very flexible and easy to adjust for that "just right' reverb.

Kjaerhus is defunct, but if you can find his old Classic Chorus and Classic Compressor, they are excellent. They are worth a google.

Voxengo SPAN, of course, is a basic requirement. Try to find version 1 if you can.

Another oldie but goodie that I highly recommend is the Luxonix LFX-1310, a very useful multi-effects plugin.

If you're looking for amp sims, the AcmeBarGig plugins are good.

If you don't have Producer Edition, and its bundled PerfectSpace convolution reverb, the free SIR is a suitable substitute.

Mr. Donald is a realistic Leslie simulator that's also fun to watch. While you're there, pick up Mr. Ray, a decent Rhodes emulation, and Organized Trio, a pretty good Hammond emulator.

A word of warning: most free VSTs are built by hobbyists for fun. That doesn't necessarily mean they're not good, but in reality a great many of them are crap. If SONAR crashes or refuses to load a project, the first thing you should suspect are any freebie plugins you might be using. All of the ones listed above I have used in the past without problems.

i can't imagine what i would use the flux stereo tool for.....

what do you use it for?

I use it mainly for two reasons. It's phase, to change the phase of my mono left channel field recordings
    +
it's general stereo width and pan switch. I use it (almost) every project.
In master bus, I add it to give more width for my mix, by turning flux's general stereo width up by 1-5 db
    +
and in individual tracks. With pads turning up the general stereo width, it does some really nice "opening" for the pad sound.

(I mainly work with ambient style of music + soft synths/romplers)

I had to go to the second page to get this one. BUT WOW! Your right this freaking vst is awesome! Thanks!

Sometimes I forget that all you have to do is plug in a microphone and a guitar and hit record, it makes it quick and easy to get a clean sound on vox or guitar depending on how you are recording. This is probably the most impressive reverb I have seen to date. Although I will say it is important to change the timing knobs around a bit depending on what you are doing.

    Excellent!

The Rocket compressor has become a go-to vst for me since I downloaded it a few months back.
It's not a freebie of course, but all the Stillwell plugs are very nice. I try to use as few plugs as possible, but I I use the VibeEQ in a lot of the cases where I do end up using a software EQ. The rocket is a good 1176'ish type of software compressor.

I agree on the JB Ferox plug. It's very nice and free.

Oh, and EpicVerb is quite a nice freebie reverb.

This list was meant to be mostly about VST's.

But I found this list for "Synth's" that I thought I would post the link to.

I don't know how good these are, but the descriptions seem very thorough, and these also have pictures and several pages of synths that are free. So I thought I would post the link to what I found, maybe this will help someone save some time looking for a soft synth. There are several pages with pictures.

    Here's the link :  http://lesitedeburnie.free.fr/lalistedeburnie1-en.html

    Hope this helps,

If you want to make grainy bleeps and bloops reminiscent of a 1980's-era Nintendo (except maybe lower-fidelity), there are a plethora of choices for free synths out there. Each one claims to have a new angle on the swept sawtooth. Booooring. Most of them are slapped together by hobbyists using canned modules, and many of them will crash your DAW. Skip the freebie synths and spend your time exploring the SONAR-bundled offerings instead. That, or start saving up pennies and selling beer cans until you can afford Omnisphere.

To an extent, I have to agree with Dave. However there are some freebies worth mention.
Proteus VX: A huge sample set, stable under XP, some have had problems using it with Vista or W7. It will misbehave if your RAM is inadequate.
Perhaps not the absolute best samples available, but a good place to start.
Majken's Chimera: Based on filtered white noise. A different approach, and a rather nice synth to work with.
Sam!22: Not really a synth, but still cool. You can assign wav files to specific keys. This one is great for special effects and ambient noise.
