Euphonix Eucon support for Sonar 8.53/X1? (new info)
Like a lot of people, I've been anxiously awaiting the ability to use the Euphonix Artis Series controllers http://www.euphonix.com/Artist/. I came across this article recently http://www.thelikelystory.com/articles/reviews/179-euphonix-artist-series-on-pc, outlining how you can host the EuCon Controller on a Mac, and access devices on it from a EuCon enabled PC. Without actually owning the hardware, I decided to try setting up EuCon on my Mac and getting the PC client working - to see if it looked like the hardware might work if I had it. Perhaps at least get at far as an empty device list. First I grabbed http://connect.euphonix.com/software/EuControl_v1.3.1.dmg and installed that on my MacBook. Seemed to install smoothly. Rebooted the Mac. OK. Next, I grabbed the Euphonix PC client software from http://connect.euphonix.com/software/EuConWS_1_4_1_061166.zip and installed that on my Sonar PC. Rebooted the PC and I see the Eucon services running in the tray. When I right-click the Discovery Service and view the database, I see that it finds the EuControl app running on the mac. When I open Sonar, I look in Options | MIDI Devices and I see a bunch of sequential entries under both Input and Output with names like "Euphonix EuMidi1", "Euphonix EuMidi2", etc. I enabled all of these. Now, from the Sonar help file, it says: 1. Follow your Euphonix surface's instructions for physically connecting the Euphonix surface to your computer and configure the Euphonix software. 2. In SONAR, use the Options-Controllers/Surfaces command to open the Controllers/Surfaces dialog. 3. Click the Add Controller/Surface button, which opens the Controller/Surface Settings dialog. 4. In the Controller/Surface field of the Controller/Surface Settings dialog, select EuCon Controller. 5. Click OK to close the Controller/Surface Settings dialog. Ok, here is my question - I do not see "EuCon Controller" in the Controller/Surface list. Is that because there is no physical unit attached? I do see other controllers that aren't installed. Does Sonar dynamically add the EuCon option when actual devices are detected? I've heard talk of some sort of Sonar/Eucon plugin, but hours of searching have not yielded its location. The plugin seems to be tied to SPE 7.02 - my guess is its built into 8.31? I'm just trying to figure out if the thing will work before dumping the $$$ into it -Dan

Well since no one seems to know, I decided to just order the MC Mix and see what happens. I can always return it if I cannot get it to work. The unit should arrive tomorrow. I will post my findings here - probably to the same silence the original question generated.

Wintaper, Sorry to see you haven't gotten any replies to your query. I would guess the reason why is that most people don't have any information about the Euphonix Artists Series working with SONAR. That's because they don't offer any Windows divers for it yet, but from what I hear they should be available around the end of the year. That said, have you considered the VS-700C as a control surface option?

That said, have you considered the VS-700C as a control surface option Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately it is much too large - I'm looking to downsize from the old Tascam US2400 I currently use (see avatar). The McMix is the perfect size. I'm pretty sure it will work using the Mac as the host for the EuCon Control App. Will post back with results shortly... -Dan

Okay, I found the elusive Euphonix plugin here: https://www.cakewalk.com/support/kb/reader.aspx?ID=20080104 Apparently it is needed with Sonar version 8 also. I downloaded the plugin and installed it. This adds the "EuCon Controller" option mentioned in step 4 of the Sonar help file above. A short while later the Euphonix MC Mix arrived. I connected it to my LAN with the Mac and the PC on it (described above) and it appeared immediately in the EuCon Control App on the Mac. I then followed the Sonar directions listed in the OP and viola - IT WORKS!!! WOOHOO!!! LOVE IT!!!</elation> So the Euphonix MC Mix CAN be used with Sonar - provided you host the control app on a Mac. While I'd certainly just prefer a PC driver, I'm completely psyched to have it working now regardless. -Dan

wintaper, This is interesting news. Out of curiosity, I am also a Tascam US2400 owner, What do you like most about the Euphonix Artist series controller? Regards, Rich

Psalmist .... Haha! I have a Tascam US2400 ... I loved it for a long time ... Its a great surface - nothing even close for the $$ - 24 faders for less than $1000. But - it is too big ... I'm tired of board tape labeling when I switch sessions ... I need EQ knobs ... And I really don't need all those channel faders at once. The Euphonix is a much better form factor - fits between keyboard and screen (see avatar photo) and does not only faders, but also aux, eq and plugins (via the knobs and ACT) - so it does a lot more (its also a lot more $$). I'm also hoping to add an MC control with the touch screen control. I can confirm that the MC Mix works with Windows 7 (x86) and Sonar (32bit) using the Sonar plugin and version 2.5.7 of the Euphonix drivers. I haven't tried it in my x64 setup. The Sonar Eucon plugin installer is 32bit only - it won't install on x64 but I think you might be able to manually install the .dll and get it to work. Honestly, I've been pulled into the dark side recently and have been using mac/protools9/euphonix for most of my work. PT9 is awesome with the MC mix (they're both avid) and features major integration with eucon/euphonix. current setup ... http://www.facebook.com/p...d1d7c&id=706123344
