Evening--re-re-mix
I wrote this song late one night a month or so ago and just finished adding other instruments. You would think by now that I would have a better idea about how to mix, but I'm afraid I don't, so I'm open to any comments or suggestions! It's slow but it's mercifully short, too. Remixed this again today (Sept. 5th). Hopefully it sounds better. Thanks to all gave advice and also to those who said it sounded good even though it needed lots of help. I'm sure it still needs help, but hopefully it's getting closer!

That was actually quite beautiful - I played it a couple of times. For about the first 20 seconds, the drums overpowered the piano a little, but no big deal - besides that the mix overall sounds excellent to me. Cheers, Doug

Janet This is a very nice piece. I must disagree with your statement that you don't know how to mix. You know how to, but I think you are not trusting your judgment. On any given piece, there are hundreds of ways to mix it, Some people like certain instruments more than others so would prefer them to be more i towards the front. Others would have their own preference. Fortuanately it is your piece so you get to put things as you wish. If it was mine, I would put the strings closer to the front, but I love strings. It is all a matter of what you like. You do fine with your ears, so trust them. Ron

This sounds lovely. Your mix shows sensitivity to the placing and volume of each instrument. Everything fits together nicely. Well done!

it's a pretty song, I'm hearing the bass a bit more than I want to, it was written on the piano, and I want to hear the piano. I think the drums could come up a bit, and the bass should come down a bit.

I started to sway side to side n my seat. Very beautiful. My ear wants something more from the mix, but I just can't say what for sure. I think maybe the whole mix could be brought forward a bit. It seems to be lacking full dynamics maybe?. Lovely work Janet. Cheers Shad

A very beautiful instrumental Janet! I would say to bring the piano up a couple of db as it would give the song a little more 'oomph'. I'm in the learning curve with the mixing myself, so I'm only telling you what I would try first. You have some remarkable talent lady!

Thanks again everyone. Tallying the responses I get: piano up strings up drums up everything up This could be fun! LOL Robby, are you SURE I didn't play that bass guitar myself?? And yeah, maybe it's a bit loud, but everyone always wants to hear the bass. I probably got a little carried away.

Very moving, lovely piece. I actually did enjoy this, I would agree with upping the piano a bit(what do I know though? XD). Apart from that, very nice indeed.

Hey, Janet! really nice piano work as usual from you! as far as the mix, the bass does sound pretty good, but I would pull it back just a tad and pull the piano up just a tad. everything sounds really good, tho, nice work!

Thanks Andrew! And thanks Reece. This might be the 2nd or 3rd one I've done using DimPro. But maybe I haven't posted those yet. I can't remember. Oh, I did post Sunset, and that was definitely Dimpro. Why?

ORIGINAL: Mamabear Thanks again everyone. Tallying the responses I get: piano up strings up drums up everything up This could be fun! LOL Makes it easy too. Just bring everything up. Janet, I agree the bass is a little strong and the drums could come up a little. That aside, great playing and very relaxing melody. A really beautiful piece.

I was just curious about the sounds is all. I've never used DIM of any flavor and was just taking mental comparisons on the sounds.

Janet, this is really nice. It really pulled me in. After a couple of listens, it seems that the drums really aren't contributing much to the song as far as the way they are mixed in at the moment. This is of coarse a matter of taste, but I feel they either need to be brought forward and play a more dominant role, or play a much less aggressive pattern (think brushes, and maybe even half-time on the hats). As usual, the piano sounds wonderful to me, but I think that the strings are competing with it for attention in the mix. You could try simply bringing down the volume of the strings, but you could also experiment with some panning. The bass does seem a bit loud. In a nutshell, I would start by bringing down the strings and the bass, rather than bring up the piano and drums, then experiment with some panning to give some depth and space to the song. It's a really nice song and makes me feel all sentimental. Nice work Janet.

Janet, Lovely tune. Very melancholic and lush. Perfect Autumn song. Strings sound amazing. There's a flute, i think that is right on top the piano and is not given it's own space. I think bass is also a tad too high in mix. I love the pad or organ sound. nice work!

Darin: Thanks for those specific comments! I decided to bring the drums up more cause I really don't want to go back and change them right now. Too many other projects competing for my time, besides real life. Some day I hope to be able to figure out brushes and half time and all that jazz. I'm reluctant to take out the drums altogether or it becomes just too mushy. I mean as in sentimental. I brought the bass down so we'll see what that sounds like now. I also brought down the strings and panned things even farther than they were. Thanks for the tip. THAT I can do. (panning) Nick--I'm glad you mentioned panning. Actually it was the violin player that I left sitting on top of the piano, so I made him move over. The flautist had to go farther stage right too. Hopefully he's far enough away now. Herb, yes, I do need to get more creative with titles. Actually this had another title, but it got changed right before publishing. I'd rather compose than name a song usually. If you've got a better name, please tell me!

Hi Janet, Lovely song the music sounds pretty tender , w a touch of embracing a fond shared memory of a favorite moment w a loved one .... my only real crit ..... I find the Bass part to be a too little far left on the soundstage for my taste /preferences... I'm a little brain washed into thinking the bass in most styles of music should come up the center.....w exceptions of course (Orchestral ) that crit aside, the emotional impact of the music is happening Kenny

Nice piece there. Very mellow. I generally agree with the other comments, just some slight mix swizzling to get it up to full potential. You definitely don't want to do a maximizer slam with this kind of music, but getting it a little more up front would make a lot of difference I think.

Blimey Janet, When I hear this in comparison with all the times I could never hear your excellent playing style you've become quite the studio engineer, sure there are a few tweaks that have been suggested here but the overwhelming impression is that it sounds good. Like Kenny I prefer the bass coming up the middle rather than in me left ear but I can hear everything clearly, of course I'm gonna say the Piano could come up too just to be annoying... A lovely tune and well put together.

hey nice work as usual Janet, of course the piano playing is the key, but the strings are very effective too. my only gripe would be i found the drums a bit weak, at times the patterns didn't seem to fit the song that well, and they seem to have too much of a rock sound to them for the style of the rest of the piece. this is only a small thing though, and doesn't take away from what is a beautiful song!

Kenny--thanks so much for stopping by to listen! I hadn't heard before that the bass player's supposed to be in the middle. I wish he would have told me! I'll move him closer to the piano. I'm glad you felt the emotion of the song. You more or less nailed what I was trying to capture. I think it's cool when we can 'play' what we're feeling. Dean--thanks to you too. Getting it more up front? I'm not sure exactly what you mean there. Jon--annoying as always, aren't you? :-) I had to keep turning this baby down to keep from clipping, so it was kinda hard to get any levels right actually. Anyway, thanks for listening! Mark--Glad you liked it. I'm still looking for better drum beats. I find it hard to do drums on these slow songs. Maybe that will have to be my next purchase cause I can't write them myself. Yet... John--thanks for the encouragement!
