Ever since I was a kid...
I had this strange obsession w/ owning many copies of the same thing. When I started playing guitar and decided that my dream guitar was a black strat, I wanted black strats. Only black strats. If I could have bought 50 guitars, they'd all have been absolutely identical. I've since switched to Les Paul. The black and cream ones, w/ amber knobs, just like the one I have (well, except mine's a Epi.) I'd want dozens just like this one. Once I'd pass the magic number of 50, then maybe I'd start a collection of all identical sunburst ones. Long story short, I hate Jeff Beck! ;)

craigb Sort of like Rudolf Schenker and his flying V's, ya? A guy back home who owned one of these - IIRC, it was one of only 250. It was stolen a few years later. I remember spending one afternoon on the deck at his home playing it through that little silver box which acted like an amp w/ a couple of effects (can't remember the name of the unit). Since the intro of Symptom of The Universe was one of the very few things I could play back then, it's no wonder he left me by myself out there after 20 minutes of me playing that riff non-stop. lol

Woah man, that was quite the rig! Most I owned was my '59 Bassman re-issue and a little Marshall combo. I just remembered - that little device I mentioned earlier, it was called a Play Bus. First "amp sim" kind of thing I've seen or heard. Man I used to wish I had one. But I couldn't even replace broken strings on my guitar. lol I guess I had my first experience of GAS in that house. There were guitars and gimmicks like that everywhere!

Reminds me of a Rockman (created by Tom Scholtz). I had one and used to wear it everywhere around the house playing - man it sounded good!

I'm not sure the Play Bus sounded that good. But to my ears back then, it was mind blowing. We're taking way back in maybe 1985. None of us kids had amps yet. In fact, my best buddy had figured a way to hook up our guitars via his dad's 8 track tape deck and mess w/ the cartridge which would generate this weird kind of fuzz - that's basically all we had for distortion. I don't know how this could work, it doesn't seem to make any sense, but it did work. To our ears, it was glorious man. We thought we sounded as heavy as Celtic Frost. lol

I realized yesterday when installing Digital Performer that I had 115 3rd party plug-ins installed on my machine - which I'm guessing is not much by anyone else's standards but I'm actually quite shocked because I hardly seem to use any of them most of the time. True, a few of them like POD Farm are broken down into a bunch of plug-ins, others are broken into mono and stereo components and there's T-Racks which account for over 20 of those. OTOH, all my Waves plugs are hidden under the WaveShell. Anyway, it may be time for a clean up.

3 already seems like a lot when it's time to put on fresh strings. Though I'm starting to consider adding a (cheap) acoustic to my rig, just for fun. A nylon strings one would also be nice. Haven't played one in 20 years.

Yeah, I studied classical guitar. Loved it wasn't doing bad but never felt like I'd become of virtuoso or anything, so after a couple of years I gave up on the relatively expensive lessons. Then a friend-ish borrowed the nylon and I never saw it again. Officially, it was stolen from him. Anyway, nothing I could do would have brought it back, and I didn't need it anymore, so I never replaced it.

Yeah, I fell for that particular model last summer at Sam Ash in NY. Pretty much out of nowhere because I was actually shopping for a HSS strat, and I'd never been lucky w/ Les Paul's. Even the big expensive and vintage ones. I tried that Black Epi because the sales guy insisted. It was quite a shock because I absolutely loved it. Then I looked up and saw footage of of a Zeppelin concert on one of the screens - Jimmy Page playing a black Les Paul... Wife said - Birthday present. Who am I to argue w/ Jimmy Page and my wife?

I started out on a Rick when I was 14. Got my first Paul, antique sunburst when I was 20, played it for 10 years. Then, I switched to Strats, playing them exclusively for about 10 years. Caught the blues bug, i guess. Five years ago I picked up a LP Studio and it was like an old lost friend, I've been playing pretty much Gibson's since. Last year on my 50th birthday I sold a black Epi LP with Gibson PU's and got an Epi Dot sunburst to celebrate the birthday. So now it is The LP Studio and the Epi Dot as my main 2 gits. I loved the look of that Black LP and some day I will have another. I believe it is the shorter scale that I like. I have smaller hands and the shorter scale feels more natural to me. Easier on old hands for string bends as well.

LOL I just remembered I used to play a very cheap black Les Paul copy Welcome to the (very early) 1980s, and a damn fine handsome and dapper looking young Straummy... Even then I had the good fashion sense to sport a pair of white socks in homage to the great McQ

Cool pic! Love the cable - I still have one of those somewhere around. :) I started on a über cheap sunburst LP copy - I'm guessing that this very bad picture dates for early 1985, when I was 12. I've worn the heck out of that Run to the Hills shirt. :P
