EveryDay
http://soundcloud.com/aaudiomystiks/everyday Ok I consider this my finest acoustic track, recorded in 2007 with nothing more than a $90 Behringer Pre Amp and a $150 Audio Technica microphone and get this all into an unbalanced input, into my Creamware DSP cards. People can say oh they were Creamware cards but the convertors on those cards were crap, only having a dynamic range of 101db. To prove a point, I have remixed the track, I have then remasterd the track using just my outboard ART PRO VLA II compressor rather than my "professional" outboard TLAudio A2. The track is about the Everyday: the decisions we make, the love we lose, unrequited love but at the core of it all we must just keep on "flying". Enjoy Neb

Hey Ben! Good to see you! My laptop has really good 'reference' speakers in it and this sounds excellent! I have no doubt this would sound excellent on my HS-80's.

Yeah, what Frank said. Actually the reverb explosions were way cool. I like people who think outside the box, and you definitely have that down to an art.

Thanks guys. It's those pesky KMeters (we all know who have been promoting them ) but they really work. They tell you how much actual headroom you have when it comes to your convertors. Most cheap converters can't handle too much above a certain level and you can see and hear it with the KMeter. Of course this doesn't and can't stop you when you are mixing certain types of music. I think I have this mastering thing now, it's only taken 12 years of my life LOL. Lynn this was forming part of my argument the other day about asking new engineers how to sound like this, eg a thousand tibetan monks chanting on a mountain. For this song I wanted to certain words to sound like god roaring off the top of a mountain, so I used Perfect Space and found one of the real space impulses, to give it an outside feeling, I have then used the old amp simulator and distorted my voice, simple. Oh to give it more decay, I've also added GR4's tape echo, this really helps, making the vocal in the parts that I have done the silence thing their is an endless echo and bang your back in the song. I've also used Perfect Space and the spring verb ever so slighty on the acoustic, which you can hear in the silence too. Finally there is an excellent impulse in the real spaces Perfect Space again, called water wiggle and it is excellent for simulating the feeling of being near a stream Hmm I've given away all my tricks. Thanks for listening guys. Neb has returned from The Nebula of Neb

I agree, this is very nicely recorded. Interesting blend of Lars Ulrich and Raine Miada (Our Lady Peace) vocals. Cheers Shad

Thanks foxwolfen, thanks for the affirmation of the recording as well. As everybody knows I'm waging a little personal I won't say war but I think kids need to understand (jesus I'm using kids nows, it only feels like yesterday since I was a kid) that good releasable recordings can be made for next to nix. It's learning your craft (sound production) it's learning your art (song writing) and musicianship, obvious. I may go about things the wrong way but, I think I have proved a point with this track. But I will leave other people to make that decision. Thanks for listening Neb

Yea but you got to understand that a lot of people really don't get this concept at all, some think I am mad because I am on a one man crusade but I'm trying to help. I think that this track is an excellent example of the digital punk attitude. I want the youth (Christ here I go again) to think about their art and not the how to get there hands on some name brand peice of equipment. In fact I wish I hadn't given that 90 dollar pre amp away because that would be my front end input for all my electric guitar, the tone that pre amp gives for guitar sims works!! Plain and simple!! Thanks for your support. Love Neb

Ben, you talk about cheep but you are $90 ahead of me in this! LOL. I only use Sonar, my Zoom R24, and instruments. I don't have any outboard gear at all. There's probably a lot like me out in the DAW world. We all are trying to make the best of what we have right? Rimshot

Hey Rimshot, thanks for listening. I know what you are saying but that s my point, I because of this audio engineering crap that I got myself into, hear all the time, how you need this that and the other to make excellent recordings, I am just pointing out the crap, thats all. Please don't be pissed at me if I am fighting for the concept that you use and enjoy. As long as the song is great, who cares what you recorded it on, right!! Thats my point. Peace Neb

I agree with you Ben. Not pissed in any way. I remember my old Teac 4 track days very well and talk about lack of equipment! We still got a publishing deal from it so I do know the power of less is more in many situations. Rimshot

I like this, kind of hypnotic, good job. Also i love your ethos on the recording side of things, im sure most music fans are happy as long as its a good song and the recording isn't terrible. Cheers bibs

Hey Ben Out Of The BOX goodness! I really like the instrument simplicity. That puts a lot of the focus on the vocals and that IMHO was a killer delivery. Mix was sounding good on my end. Great use of the verbs and delays, nice! If I had to nit and this is a nit, I had a smidge of low end boominess in the bass. It sounded like it was sitting in the same range as the low end of the acoustic guitar. I only noticed it when the guitar and bass played together. But I seem to be the only one who has said anything so it probably just me. A really EXCELLENT piece of music! Kev

Thanks Kev, yea I can hear what you are hearing, it was a hard one to fix and perhaps I should have done more but as you have so rightly pointed out it's the vocal. I also tried panning the bass 25 right and guitar 25 left to seperate the problem, should have been more maybe. One of these days I will get back to writing music instead of causing fires on soical media!! Thanks for support and listening. Neb
